SCADA Engineer - Renewables & Grid

Black & Veatch is seeking a SCADA engineering professional to assist in the technical design of substation and renewable energy Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. This role involves conceptual and detailed design of SCADA hardware, networking equipment, fiber networks, datalinks, points list, RTU configurations, remote I/O module configurations, Meter configurations, PMU/PDC device configurations, and Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens.

Responsibilities

• Generate engineering design documents and deliverables (drawings, points list, configuration files, etc.) for substation and renewable energy SCADA systems.
• Provide oversight and lead lower-level engineering work or assignments.
• Teach fundamental SCADA concepts to other engineers.
• Utilize effective verbal and written communication skills to convey ideas and solutions.
• Coordinate SCADA project work for timely execution and prioritize tasks.
• Provide clients with recommended solutions based on standards, best practices, and industry standards.
• Develop control system network architecture diagrams, datalink points list, control narratives, control logic diagrams, protection and control drawings, and procurement specifications for SCADA equipment.
• Read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line AC schematics, and DC schematics.
• Configure devices using DNP3 protocol, IPv4 addressing, and serial communication settings (RS-232, RS-485).
• Develop HMI screens and RTU configurations.
• Configure protective relays, substation and renewable energy automation systems, and synchrophasor data devices (PMU, PDC, DFRs).
• Provide remote support to field construction teams for troubleshooting and issue resolution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science from a recognized accredited program.
• Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
• Experience in controls system design for power projects.
• Understanding of DNP3 protocol and device configuration for Ethernet/IPv4 and serial communications.
• Experience with HMI screen development and RTU configuration.
• Ability to read one-line diagrams, three-line AC schematics, and DC schematics.
• Experience configuring protective relays, substation, and renewable energy automation systems.
• Holds or is eligible for active engineering registration or licensure to support Engineer of Record (EOR) requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Substation and renewable energy (wind, solar, battery energy storage) experience.
• Experience with IEC 61850, Modbus, OPC UA, and other control system protocols over TCP/IP or serial.
• Experience with VMware, Factory Talk, Ignition, AVEVA HMI software, Cloud View, Subnet Solutions, Factory Studio, Cimplicity, or other virtual/HMI software platforms.
• Experience with SEL RTAC and IED architecture design and configuration.
• Experience with Allen Bradley Control Logic PLC configuration.
• Experience with NERC-CIP cyber security standards.
• Experience with IEEE 1547 inverters controlled as a system.
• Experience with OT single-mode fiber optic network design.
• Network troubleshooting skills and experience with tools such as Wireshark, Modbus Poll, etc.
• Experience with Excel macros and VBA language.
• Excellent presentation skills and ability to work effectively in teams.
• Willingness to learn industry-specific processes and procedures.
• Flexibility in work hours as required by client or project needs.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer.

Pay

State of Colorado: $126,423 - $211,134 annually.
