About the role

Perform clinical testing and analysis, including highly complex manual assays of patient specimens, for patient care purposes. Using technical knowledge and a theoretical understanding of the basis of the tests, record and validate the accuracy and quality of results to ensure conformity to specifications. Understand and apply the correct control measures and protocols in cases of abnormal results, reporting any discrepancies to Supervisor or designee. Maintain supply inventory, perform and document routine preventative maintenance, and perform simple troubleshooting. Work is performed independently under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Determine suitability of specimens based on established criteria for acceptance.
  • Perform specimen processing and check work of unlicensed lab technicians.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and perform quality control testing on them.
  • Perform specialized manual and automated testing on clinical specimens, including environmental testing (e.g., wipe test), QC tests, and setups of robotic systems, if required.
  • Use complex laboratory information system to record quality control and environmental test results.
  • Perform daily maintenance, calibration, and function checks of instruments/equipment; perform basic troubleshooting and initiate corrective action when needed.
  • Ensure adequate levels of supplies and equipment; maintain complete and accurate records of all work.
  • Analyze data from high complexity testing and submit preliminary clinical reports for review.
  • Recognize and resolve inconsistent results; follow up with repeated or additional testing.
  • Generate documents and reports of testing results; perform second check of test reports, as applicable.
  • Review standard operating procedures and recommend changes for potential process improvements.
  • Comply with governmental regulations and Stanford Health Care and Blood Center policies regarding health and safety; observe and support good health and safety practices.
  • Strictly observe privacy and security related policies, procedures, and practices to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information.
  • Act as a responsible information steward and treat information as sensitive and confidential in accordance with federal and state laws and professional ethics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in medical technology or a life science.
  • 1+ year to 2 years of hands-on testing experience in a clinical lab.
  • CA CLS license (Clinical Laboratory Scientist).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of clinical sample testing in specific area(s) of expertise.
  • Understanding of complex testing processes and underlying biology of the system.
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize results from a wide variety of tests correctly and quickly.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory information system/database and operation, or ability to learn system quickly.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, verbally and in writing, with people of widely diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative group with diverse team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathologist) certification.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) required upon hire, or
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist Limited (CLS-LTD) required upon hire.
  • Histocompatibility Laboratory will accept Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) OR Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHCS).
  • Technical Services Laboratory will accept Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) OR Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist (CIS).

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, hand use, repetitive motion, grasping, and fine manipulation.
  • Constant computer use and handwriting; full color vision.
  • Constant lifting of 0-10 lbs (0 to 5 in height), occasional lifting of 11-20 lbs (0 to 5 in height), seldom lifting of 21-30 lbs (0 to 2 in height) and 31-40 lbs (0 to 2 in height).
  • Constant carrying of 0-10 lbs (0 to 25 in height).
  • Constant working around equipment and machinery; working with biohazards such as bloodborne pathogens, hospital waste, etc.
  • Occasional operation of foot controls or repetitive foot movement, use of special visual or auditory protective equipment, and work under extreme time constraints.
  • Occasional work with radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, and allergens/chemicals.
  • May be "on call" or work occasional extended hours.
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Category I - Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.

Pay

Generally starting at $59.21 - $78.43 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
