About the role

The Sanitation Technician is responsible for the proper sanitation and cleaning of production and blending area equipment, completing assigned tasks on the Master Sanitation Schedule, and various other cleaning tasks throughout the facility. This role includes sterilizing and starting up processing and filling lines according to the production schedule at the start of each week to ensure the team is ready to run lines on Monday mornings. Individuals must maintain a safe and pleasant manner while following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and safety procedures to meet the department’s goal of producing safe, quality cases as efficiently as possible.

Responsibilities

  • Learn, practice, and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety, and quality policies and procedures.
  • Follow all processing, changeover, clean-up, and sanitation procedures for equipment and machines per SOPs.
  • Safely and efficiently set up, clean, and operate blending and filler equipment to meet Work Order (WO) requirements.
  • Perform CIP (Clean In Place) and SIP (Sterilize In Place) on blending and filling equipment to ensure proper cleaning and sterilization for production.
  • Clean and sanitize machines, tables, scales, and utensils per established SOPs.
  • Complete the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • Maintain cleanliness inside and outside the plant per the MSS and as needed by other departments and management.
  • Learn and practice Lean Manufacturing to improve efficiency and eliminate waste.
  • Follow aseptic manufacturing process flow and step-by-step requirements.
  • Work with the Quality team to ensure food safety and quality standards are met.
  • Blend batches using respective batch sheets (formulas) for the product being produced.
  • Use proper documentation practices to record weights, lot numbers, total gallons, and other required information on batch sheets, logs, and cleaning verification paperwork.
  • Understand part numbers, lot numbers, and product descriptions as they relate to the Work Order (WO).
  • Demonstrate good judgment by reacting to unsafe acts or conditions, making them safe, or reporting them immediately.
  • Update and maintain all required logs and paperwork within the department (e.g., equipment use, cleaning logs, WO) legibly and accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment to ensure employee safety, product integrity, and efficiency.
  • Perform assigned tasks while wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain confidentiality, regular and reliable attendance, and work in other areas or perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Comprehend basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, weights and measures, and efficient use of a calculator.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic computer and control systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to assemble, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs on manufacturing equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally within the organization.
  • Basic knowledge of food processing.
  • Ability to provide positive suggestions to improve operations in the work center.
  • Team-oriented: helpful, respectful, approachable, builds strong working relationships, and fosters a positive work environment.
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and work well under changing demands.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong work ethic, highly motivated, and hands-on problem solver.

  • Successfully complete and attain a passing score on the entry-level test.
  • High school diploma or GED, and/or 2 years of work experience preferably in a manufacturing environment.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work beyond regularly scheduled hours during peak periods or critical operations.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and verbal communication skills to meet essential job performance and safety standards.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and regularly perform physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, and using hands for detailed tasks.
  • Capable of safely lifting up to 50 pounds frequently throughout the day; ability to handle heavier items with proper lifting equipment or team-assisted techniques.
  • Physically capable of performing tasks such as climbing and using hand and power tools, including pallet jacks, scales, ladders, and standard material handling and cleaning equipment.

Work Environment

  • Work in a dynamic manufacturing environment with exposure to odors, dust, moderate noise levels, and fluctuations in temperature and ventilation.
  • Exposure to inclement weather may occur.
  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, which may include safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, gloves, hairnets, uniforms, and face shields, as required by specific job duties and safety protocols.

  • Reaching out to the site Quality Manager or VP of Quality if there is any doubt about your role in the Finlays quality and food safety management system.
