About the Role

Performs equipment operations in the collection and disposal of residential garbage, yard waste, recyclable materials, refuse, and debris. Operates a motorized loader packer or related sanitation equipment on an assigned route to collect and dispose of refuse from residential and business areas. May supervise a small crew of employees responsible for refuse and debris collection. Disposes of daily collections at designated sites based on material type. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated for efficiency and effectiveness.

Work involves exposure to outdoor environments, extreme temperatures, noise, atmospheric conditions, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils, and skin irritants. Compliance with OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a loader packer or related sanitation equipment to collect and dispose of refuse from residential and business areas.
  • Operates specialized recycling collection trucks with bins for various materials; collects curbside recyclables and sorts them into proper bins; empties bins at recycling centers and maintains records of recycled materials by type.
  • Supervises sanitation laborers in loading and unloading refuse; instructs crew on standard collection and disposal methods; ensures safety compliance during routes.
  • Performs minor maintenance and care of motorized sanitation equipment.
  • Maintains simple records of route activities and collections.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • 2 to 5 years of experience operating motorized sanitation equipment and collecting trash/refuse, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina commercial Class B driver’s license.

Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the Town’s street system.
  • Considerable knowledge of motorized sanitation equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of Town policies, state/local laws, and regulations regarding solid waste collection and disposal.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and procedures for sanitation crews.
  • Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations for operating motorized equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to supervise sanitation laborers effectively.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and crew members.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
