Sanislo Elementary & Lafayette Elementary - PE Specialist - 1.0 FTE

This position is split between two schools: 0.5 FTE at Sanislo Elementary and 0.5 FTE at Lafayette Elementary. Candidates must hold a Health/Fitness endorsed Washington teaching certificate.

About the Role

A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment, facilitates curriculum development or revision, establishes learning objectives based on District guidelines, provides instruction, counsels, disciplines, and supervises students to meet individual needs, and evaluates student performance. This role involves instructing students in self-contained classes or courses, typically in grades not above 6, and may include teaching specialized subjects such as music, band, or physical education.

Responsibilities

• Fosters an educational environment conducive to student learning and maturation; plans and implements instructional programs tailored to individual and group needs, including at-risk or special needs youth; prepares lesson plans (25%).
• Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to student well-being and curriculum objectives; attends in-service training and pursues professional growth to remain current in teaching techniques (25%).
• Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures for student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling, and discipline to encourage student achievement; makes referrals for additional support as needed (20%).
• Confers with students, parents or guardians, and staff to maintain open, positive relationships and provide guidance and evaluation (10%).
• Sets classroom goals and objectives aligned with state and District standards; evaluates and records student progress; prepares reports for parents or guardians (5%).
• Collects and interprets data; provides reports for administrative purposes (5%).
• Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel (5%).
• Attends required staff meetings and participates in activities deemed necessary by the District or building principal (5%).
• Serves on staff committees as required and participates in activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
• Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.

Working Conditions

• Deals with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; remains flexible to meet immediate student needs.
• Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritizes effectively; may experience frequent interruptions.
• Occasionally deals with distraught or difficult students; may be exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
• May require specific physical positions, movements, and stamina to demonstrate techniques safely or conduct/direct students.
• May need to take precautions to prevent or lessen exposure to materials, fumes, equipment, or hot surfaces.
• May teach in classrooms without telephone communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree; academic preparation or experience in teaching a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population in an urban school system.
• Additional academic preparation or professional experience may be required for specific programs, such as working with bilingual students, implementing dropout prevention programs, or teaching multi-level, open-concept, or mainstreamed classes.
• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Health/Fitness endorsement.
• Some positions may require valid first aid and CPR certification, a Washington State driver’s license, or a Class II driver’s license.
• Successful completion of a criminal justice fingerprint and background check.

Skills

Benefits

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB).
