Salt Truck Operator

About the role

Drive a salt route through winter storms to keep commercial and residential properties clear. Load your own truck using a skid steer, perform pre‑ and post‑run equipment checks, and stay in contact with your manager throughout each event.

Responsibilities

• Operate a salt spreader on a designated route as soon as a storm hits.
• Load the truck with salt using a skid steer, then return to the road quickly.
• Prioritize “no‑tolerance” sites before covering the rest of the route.
• Drive cautiously in tough winter conditions, protecting the truck, load, and other road users.
• Perform basic maintenance and pre‑/post‑run equipment checks to keep trucks storm‑ready.
• Maintain communication with your manager during each event to ensure nothing is missed.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license with a clean, insurable driving record (all records are reviewed).
• Ability to operate a skid steer to load salt.
• Reliability for on‑call storm response, including nights, weekends, holidays, and long shifts.
• Physical stamina to work outdoors in cold, snow, and ice, climb in and out of the truck, and handle bagged salt.
• CDL not required; however, a CDL provides a pay raise for trucks over 26,000 lb.

Pay

• Seasonal hourly rate: $32–$38 per hour.
• Additional pay bump for CDL holders.
• Overtime paid at time‑and‑a‑half for hours over 40 in a week.

• On‑call storm response required; shifts may occur nights, weekends, holidays, and can be long when snow hits.
• Goal to clear properties within about 12 hours of a storm.
