About the Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Mechanical or Electrical Engineer to serve as a Sales Engineer. The ideal candidate will bring 7+ years of experience in engineered capital equipment, industrial systems, or custom-engineered products. This role blends deep technical expertise with customer-facing leadership, guiding clients through complex, engineered-to-order enclosure and modular building solutions.
Responsibilities
- Technical Expertise & Solution Development
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert for mechanical, electrical, and structural systems supporting modular buildings, E-Houses, and other engineered solutions.
- Review and interpret technical specifications, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, mechanical layouts, construction drawings, and related engineering documentation.
- Develop practical, engineered solutions that meet customer requirements, applicable codes and standards, and the Company’s manufacturing capabilities.
- Provide technical guidance and recommendations related to power distribution, thermal management and cooling, equipment integration, enclosure design, and overall system configuration.
- Evaluate customer requirements and project constraints to identify technically sound and commercially viable solutions.
- RFQ & Proposal Leadership
- Lead the technical evaluation and response process for complex RFQs involving engineered-to-order capital equipment and customized solutions.
- Develop comprehensive technical proposals, scope documents, equipment configurations, and specification clarifications.
- Review customer specifications to identify technical requirements, potential risks, exclusions, and areas requiring clarification.
- Ensure proposals are technically accurate, compliant with customer requirements, and aligned with internal engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
- Partner with Sales and Engineering to develop solutions that balance customer expectations, technical feasibility, cost, and schedule.
- Customer Engagement & Relationship Management
- Lead customer meetings, site visits, technical presentations, design reviews, and project discussions throughout North America.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to customers throughout complex, long-cycle capital equipment sales processes.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with end users, EPC firms, system integrators, contractors, and other key stakeholders.
- Translate complex engineering concepts into clear, actionable information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Maintain ongoing customer communication throughout the project lifecycle, particularly when technical requirements, scope, or project conditions change.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Sales, Applications Engineering, Product Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and other internal teams to develop and deliver customer solutions.
- Ensure proposed solutions are technically feasible, cost-effective, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
- Support design transfer, project kickoff, and handoff activities to ensure a smooth transition from sales through execution.
- Facilitate communication between customers and internal teams to resolve technical questions, manage changes, and maintain project alignment.
- Provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle as customer requirements or field conditions evolve.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of experience working with engineered products, capital equipment, industrial systems, modular solutions, or other complex technical products.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, mechanical layouts, construction drawings, and related technical documentation.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, HVAC and cooling technologies, equipment integration, enclosure design, or related industrial systems.
- Experience working in engineered-to-order (ETO) project environments.
- Strong technical communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex engineering concepts to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and customer requirements in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with CRM platforms, preferably Salesforce, and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data center infrastructure, modular buildings, E-Houses, electrical enclosures, or similar engineered systems.
- Knowledge of construction practices, MEP coordination, commissioning, or design-build project environments.
- Experience working directly with EPC firms, contractors, system integrators, or organizations involved in capital equipment procurement.
- Experience supporting complex, long-cycle capital equipment sales and project development.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
Work Environment
- Location: Onsite in Itasca, Illinois.
- Travel: Approximately 25–50% throughout North America for customer meetings, site walks, design reviews, project evaluations, and other business needs.
- Collaboration: Highly collaborative environment with frequent interaction across Engineering, Sales, Applications, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and customer teams.
- Role: Customer-facing technical leadership position combining engineering expertise, solution development, proposal leadership, and strategic customer engagement.
