Safety Team Lead

About the role

The Safety Team Lead assists in developing, implementing, and auditing safety policies to ensure regulatory compliance. Supports safety programs across locations, assists other safety professionals, and promotes a strong safety culture by advising field employees, management, and customers on safety and injury prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Participate with safety leadership in workload delegation and schedule management to maintain required coverage.
  • Participate with safety leadership in mentoring and training of safety staff within the team.
  • Review and quality control of team members' work.
  • Lead safety project and resource management planning in collaboration with field and project management partners.
  • Facilitate training in-person, virtually, or as an e-learning in collaboration with the Training Dept.
  • Train field leaders on their responsibilities in safety protocols, programs, and hazard identification.
  • Build and maintain strong internal relationships with field leadership and other team members to drive positive change and strengthen our safety culture.
  • Prepare for and respond to natural disasters (building evacuation drills).
  • Build and maintain strong external relationships with clients, subcontractors, and industry & regulatory organizations.
  • Aid in injury management by tracking follow-ups and communicating as needed.
  • Ensure proper documentation is acquired in a timely manner and ensure appropriate management of work-related injuries and proper care for injured employees.
  • Aid in developing and communicating site-specific safety plans and review the plan meets all customer requirements.
  • Field engagements to ensure the site is following the site-specific safety plan.
  • Respond to a safety incident in support and consultation.
  • Conduct incident investigations for gathering and storing all necessary documentation.
  • Coach partners (e.g., field, shop, office) on safe practices and regulations.
  • Manage internal and external safety inspections and audits, supporting job site hazard analysis, and ensuring that appropriate safety records are maintained.
  • Review serious injuries and incidents, analyze corrective actions, and evaluate and recommend preventive measures.
  • Identify hazards and recommend controls.
  • Develop strategies to control exposure to hazardous environments and ensure that unsafe acts and conditions are corrected promptly.
  • Aid in the proper selection of safety-related equipment, such as signage, relevant personal protective clothing, and other equipment.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice on safety, safety management, and compliance.
  • Liaise with organizations and relevant authorities to provide assistance, requested documentation, and follow-up protocols for audits and remedial actions.

  • Aid in injury management by coordinating response, medical care, and return to work with the employee, supervisor, and Risk Management.
  • Support and assist with calling for a pause in work and leading a meeting to discuss safety issues and mitigation.
  • Create and maintain evacuation plans, conduct drills, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Conduct research and develop statistical analyses to support management decision-making.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of safety/environmental principles and techniques.
  • Familiar with Federal, State, and local Environmental Health & Safety regulations.
  • Familiar with construction operations.
  • Ability to voice professional opinions and concerns in a tactful, authentic, and approachable manner to field leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify safety-related exposures and propose corrective actions.
  • Demonstrate elements of leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills to build professional relationships.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth by seeking out new learning initiatives and championing knowledge-sharing across the organization and with our external stakeholders.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with close attention to detail.

  • Able to work in a non-structured environment and flexible to reprioritize responsibilities with management direction.

  • Able to manage and re-prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in construction, maintenance, safety, or operations is required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in related industries, such as mechanical contracting or comparable commercial/industrial construction.
  • A minimum of 2 years of leadership experience with the ability to delegate and direct the work of others.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited degree program in Occupational Safety and Health, Engineering, or related field of study, OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Required must have a valid driver’s license meeting company requirements.
  • CHST or CSP Certification required.

Pay

$X per hour

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with a one-hour break for lunch and two rest breaks. Eight hours per day is required and other occasional overtime may be necessary for business needs.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move or transport equipment up to 25 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Specific vision abilities are often required, including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs or ladders for extended periods, often over various and uneven terrains.
  • Use of hands and fingers for tasks such as tool use, equipment operation, and typing.
  • Ability to inspect equipment in various positions/confined areas.
  • Must be able to work in varying climate conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Must be able to work safely at heights exceeding 20 feet and within permit-required confined spaces while wearing all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
