Safety Specialist- Substation

Eastern United States (extensive travel required)

About the role

We are seeking a Safety Specialist to support Substation Construction projects throughout the Eastern United States. This role provides hands-on safety leadership for direct-hire employees and subcontractors, helping ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company, client, and regulatory requirements.

As a trusted member of the project team, you'll help identify risks, develop practical solutions, conduct training, investigate incidents, and champion a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Support and oversee safety programs on active substation construction projects
• Conduct safety observations, audits, inspections, and compliance reviews
• Develop, deliver, and document safety training and educational programs
• Lead incident, injury, property damage, and near-miss investigations
• Create and maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs)
• Partner with project teams to proactively identify and mitigate risks
• Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and employee engagement initiatives
• Monitor subcontractor safety performance and project compliance
• Maintain safety records, reports, metrics, and training documentation
• Promote continuous improvement through coaching, mentoring, and positive safety leadership

Requirements

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification
• Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience
• Experience supporting utility, energy, industrial, electrical, or construction projects
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard recognition, incident investigations, and risk assessment practices
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Valid driver's license
• Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout the Eastern United States

Preferred Qualifications

• Substation construction experience
• OSHA 500 and/or OSHA 501 Authorized Trainer Certification
• CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor Certification
• Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
• Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
• Knowledge of NFPA 70E and electrical safety standards
• Experience overseeing subcontractor safety programs

Work Environment

This position requires extensive travel throughout the Eastern United States, including overnight travel. Work will primarily be performed in active substation construction environments and will involve exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and electrical construction activities.
