Safety Specialist - Mechanical

About the role

In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring safety and health compliance with applicable regulations and existing Hooper Corporation and client standards, contributing to an environment where employee, client, and contractor health and safety is preserved. You will develop and implement site-specific Safety Plans, monitor safety compliance, and audit safety performance at complex project sites. Experience with facility construction and capital project support for facility expansions is required; experience with safety in a heating and air conditioning company is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Routinely monitor Hooper Corporation's safety performance to verify compliance with Hooper Corporation, client, and regulatory requirements.
• Interface with and support the construction management team by delivering current data on safety performance, including trending, incident management, metrics, and other key information.
• Facilitate communications, including safety meetings and notices, to ensure relevant safety information is shared on-site and with Hooper’s Corporate safety department.
• Conduct regular site safety walks with the client safety management representative and participate in walks with clients and other contractors.
• Address non-compliance or non-conformance immediately by notifying the individual and key stakeholders.
• Participate in progress and schedule meetings, as well as client trainings upon request.
• Evaluate and audit the Site-Specific Safety Plan for conformance to client and regulatory requirements.
• Verify adherence to operational safety requirements and support client initiatives as requested.
• Ensure appropriate PPE is available, used, maintained, and sanitized, and verify communication systems are in place.
• Participate in daily safety briefings with the project field team.
• Oversee maintenance of safety equipment and establish decontamination procedures.
• Exercise authority to stop work in the event of an imminent safety hazard or dangerous situation and resume work after verification from the Client Safety representative.
• Conduct safety observations and audits, investigate and correct incidents and near misses, and maintain records of inspections, monitoring, and investigations.
• Complete and maintain required training.
• Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, safety, or a related discipline preferred.
• 3 to 5 years of full-time experience in project health and safety support and leadership.
• 5 to 10 years of experience in construction project safety and health leadership on capital projects may substitute for a degree.
• Competency in OSHA requirements regarding Crane, Derrick, and Hoist Safety.
• Competency in OSHA excavation standards at 29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart P.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety Manager Construction (CSMC), or equivalent certifications preferred.
• Completed training and certifications for OSHA 10 and 30-hour construction preferred.
• Strong commitment to safety, including implementing strict safety protocols.
• Strong initiative, problem-solving, communication skills, and attention to detail.
• Valid driver's license.
