Safety & Occupational Health Specialist.

About the Role

This position involves reviewing private contractor operations for new construction and building alterations to assess compliance with safety standards and regulatory criteria. The role includes recommending procedures to control or eliminate hazardous conditions.

Responsibilities

• Inspect warehouses, administrative areas, production areas, storage and material handling operations, shop machinery, mechanical processes, vehicles, protective clothing, and fire suppression equipment.
• Compile statistical data to identify mishap trends and apply preventive methods.
• Review facility-related projects, including MILCON, new construction, and renovations, for safety considerations.
• Ensure projects comply with safety regulations and are safe to operate and maintain upon completion.
• Develop and prepare safety and occupational health directives and regulations based on higher command instructions.
• Prepare written procedures for safety prevention activities, including motor vehicle mishap prevention, safe materials handling, and safe storage of toxic chemicals.

• This position may be used to fill various shifts located anywhere within DLA Distribution Ogden, Hill AFB, UT.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume and supporting documentation must demonstrate one of the following:

• Education Substitution: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.M. in one of the following fields: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, or related fields supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in disciplines such as safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, or industrial psychology. Transcripts are required if using education to qualify.
• Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level, including:
  • Managing safety or occupational health program elements.
  • Developing and recommending safety and occupational health policies.
  • Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, and practices to resolve technical matters.
  • Developing safety standards, regulations, or procedures to control hazards.
  • Implementing programs to reduce accidents and occupational illnesses.
  • Analyzing jobs, processes, or systems to identify hazards.
  • Designing or modifying workplaces to eliminate hazards.
  • Inspecting workplaces for compliance with safety standards.
  • Training personnel in safety or occupational health subjects.
  • Experience in occupational fields such as industrial hygiene, safety engineering, or occupational health nursing.
• Combination: A combination of education and experience may be used to meet qualification requirements for GS-11.

Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education credentials to ensure equivalency to a U.S. education program.

Physical Demands

• Frequent surveys of warehouses, printing plants, new construction sites, machine shops, and vehicle maintenance facilities, requiring prolonged walking, standing, and bending.

Work Environment

• Exposure to operating machinery, hazardous materials (including chemical and flammable liquids), acid fumes, and construction hazards.
