Safety Manager

WSP is seeking a field-based Safety Manager to join our Construction Management team for the Power Constructors, Inc. (PCI) sector in Las Vegas, Nevada. This role involves working across various field offices in Nevada, with approximately half the time spent in the field at transmission line, substation, and telecommunications sites. WSP brings global expertise in power delivery, generation, and program management, recently expanded through the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc. and TRC Companies.

About the role

Oversees field project safety planning and execution for large-scale, complex electric utility construction projects. This role supports WSP’s scope, resolves high-impact field safety issues, aligns with client expectations, monitors contract health and safety requirements, and tracks performance objectives. The Safety Manager leverages expertise in electric utility construction methods, regulatory compliance, and contract terms to facilitate monitoring and reporting. The position also supports long-term project safety strategies, promotes innovation in construction practices, and champions risk mitigation efforts to foster a strong safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead the overall field execution of WSP’s safety management scope for the Greenlink Nevada Program.
• Coordinate technical and operational aspects of safety, ensuring alignment with contract scope and regulatory standards.
• Serve as the WSP field safety liaison between NV Energy, contractors, consultants, and agency representatives.
• Oversee the implementation of construction safety strategies and promote a culture of safety excellence.
• Participate in executive-level client briefings, board meetings, and progress reporting forums.
• Evaluate contractor safety performance and participate in performance reviews and closeout assessments.
• Contribute to innovation initiatives by promoting new tools, technologies, and process improvements.
• Communicate known job site hazards to WSP employees, subcontractors, construction contractors, and NV Energy.
• Develop, maintain, and execute the Project Safety Management Plan and other safety-related project execution documents.
• Develop, maintain, and execute WSP’s Site-Specific Safety Plan(s) for the Program.
• Review all contractor(s) Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) and work plans to ensure compliance with NV Energy Safety Requirements and applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations, including those of WSP subcontractors.
• Identify and provide contact information for local medical, fire, and law enforcement agencies closest to the Project site.
• Review contract requirements related to safety and health with construction contractors and their subcontractors, including rules and procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), allowable working hours, and special work permits or procedures.
• Inform WSP subcontractors of emergency response plan requirements for the Project site.
• Participate in daily tailboard meetings and other project meetings as required.
• Perform thorough periodic and random safety audits, reporting discrepancies or deficiencies. Share audit results requiring corrective action, training, or follow-up with WSP Management and the Company.
• Observe and report unsafe work activities to WSP Management and/or the NV Energy safety representative on a defined cadence using the 1st Application reporting platform.
• Facilitate the implementation and processing of the NV Energy 1st Application reporting, including field engagement, job observations, safety meetings, and safety incidents (e.g., injury, vehicle damage, equipment damage, inadvertent operation, near miss, hazard identification, good catch, serious injury/fatality exposure, and work stoppage).
• Review construction contractor incident reports and root cause analyses.
• Process WSP and NV Energy incident reports and root cause analyses.
• Maintain records to demonstrate Program compliance using POWER360 software and the 1st Application, including:
  • Safety Manager Site Reports
  • Contractor Safety Training Logs and Certificates
  • Contractor Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and tailboards
  • Incident/Accident reports
• Verify that new WSP employees and project personnel complete the project EHS orientation training prior to working. Maintain the project EHS orientation training completion roster and issue hard hat stickers. Notify personnel of orientation training expiration and verify re-training completion as required.
• Provide technical input into WSP employee and subcontractor accident, injury, and property damage/loss investigations, and share details with the corporate safety department.
• Ensure WSP follows NV Energy’s incident and accident reporting procedures as well as WSP’s company procedures outlined in the Corporate Safety Plan.
• Prepare monthly program safety statistic reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in safety management or a closely related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
• OSHA 30-hour certification or equivalent health and safety training.
• 10+ years of relevant experience as a safety manager for large, complex electrical infrastructure projects.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise and manage subordinate safety managers and coordinate work among stakeholders.
• Proven history of managing multi-site safety programs.
• In-depth understanding of OSHA standards (especially 29 CFR 1926 for construction), State and local safety codes.
• Expertise in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), Incident Investigation, and Root Cause Analysis.
• Ability to foster a culture of safety, not just enforce compliance.
• Skilled in developing and delivering safety training programs.
• Detail-oriented and highly organized with a proactive risk mitigation mindset.
• Ability to prepare and present executive-level progress reports, technical documentation, and briefings.
• Strong communication skills for high-pressure situations with senior leadership, clients, and contractors.
• Capable of working across offices and geographic regions to support distributed project delivery.
• Record of ethical leadership, client stewardship, and operational excellence.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• First Aid/CPR Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
• Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP).

Pay

Expected salary range: $115,100 - $205,040. The final compensation will be based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity, as well as the specific geographic location.
