Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities
- Execute Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies and procedures and ensure compliance with Business Unit (BU) and company requirements across all warehouse project sites.
- Lead, influence, and motivate teams while modeling the highest standards of Smith Group of Americas Construction’s safety culture.
- Review, influence, and provide input on business and subcontract agreements related to EH&S in partnership with Operations leadership.
- Provide leadership and direction for decision-making on key EH&S risks, challenges, and opportunities.
- Support development and continuous improvement of corporate EH&S programs in collaboration with company leadership.
- Identify, eliminate, and control hazardous conditions that may lead to injury or property damage using established safety standards, best practices, and EH&S programs.
- Drive cultural change and continuous improvement by influencing leadership and project teams to adopt proactive safety behaviors.
- Develop BU EH&S goals in partnership with leadership and implement programs to reduce incidents, injuries, near misses, and claims costs.
- Analyze and track EH&S performance metrics, identify trends, and implement corrective actions for continuous improvement.
- Lead development and execution of the Annual BU EH&S Plan aligned with corporate safety objectives.
- Oversee audit schedules for project site teams and ensure consistency, quality, and completion across all warehouse project sites.
- Conduct audits using company-approved systems; analyze trends, metrics, and incident data; and report performance to leadership.
- Maintain strong working relationships with OSHA and other regulatory agencies; proactively manage regulatory compliance and minimize citations.
- Represent Smith Group of Americas Construction in industry organizations and promote safety leadership within the construction community.
- Evaluate safety knowledge and performance across job families and support EH&S performance evaluations.
- Identify training needs, implement safety training programs, and ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Stay current on applicable federal, state, and local EH&S regulations and educate stakeholders on compliance requirements.
- Lead by example in professional development, continuous learning, and maintaining required certifications.
- Mentor and coach EH&S professionals to foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment.
- Manage BU EH&S budget in coordination with leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Minimum of 13 years of construction safety experience (warehouse, industrial, or large-scale commercial projects preferred).
- Construction Health Safety Technician (CHST) certification required or obtained within 6 months of hire.
- OSHA 30-hour certification required; maintain current First Aid/CPR/BBP and AED certifications.
- Deep knowledge of environmental health & safety principles, practices, and regulations.
- Extensive experience in incident management, investigation, and corrective action implementation.
- Proven ability to identify risk exposures and implement effective mitigation strategies.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience with ability to influence across multiple teams.
- Experience managing budgets, resources, and departmental priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EH&S management systems.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites; reliable transportation required.
