Safety Manager
About the role
The Safety Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the MIC Safety Program, demonstrating management skills and the ability to manage all aspects of a project safety program. This role may serve as the lead safety manager on a project and reports directly to EHS Sr. Leadership or a Group/Senior Safety Manager. Responsibilities and authority will increase progressively with experience.
This is a traveling, project-based position with up to 90% travel. You may be placed on a project site in any U.S. state and typically spend 8–18 months per project. The role includes designated per diem in addition to a base salary, mobilization support (which may include mileage reimbursement), and one longer weekend every four weeks for additional time at home.
Responsibilities
- Safety:
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the safety program on complex construction projects.
- Conduct workplace safety checks to identify infractions and initiate Stop Work Authority when necessary.
- Provide direction and guidance to onsite construction staff on corrective action to eliminate hazards and mitigate future risk.
- Provide safety leadership to create enthusiasm and participation among management and craft workers, resulting in excellent safety performance.
- Participate in the jobsite R4 Safety Committee and monitor results for presentation to site management.
- Chair or assist in site safety committee and R4 meetings; review R4 documents and present information to management.
- Attend weekly general safety meetings, weekly supervisor safety meetings, and daily gang box meetings.
- Communicate between MIC and client management regarding safety matters.
- Input and review incident reports; monitor all site safety reports and maintain site bulletin board postings.
- Track, compile, and present leading indicator statistics to the project leadership team.
- Maintain jobsite first aid and emergency response supplies.
- Administer drug and alcohol testing on site.
- Spend 60% of time in the field on job sites; if unable, communicate this to the Senior Environmental Safety & Health Manager.
- Compliance:
- Identify workplace safety hazards and guide site management in corrective action to eliminate or minimize them; document actions on daily activity report.
- Implement the Zero Injury System of safety excellence on projects.
- Understand and implement safety policies and procedures; understand environmental permitting regulations and measures to ensure compliance.
- Implement the company environmental program and perform weekly inspections as required.
- Lead site inspections and testing as necessary and compile DFR in a timely fashion.
- Review safety program documentation, record keeping, document posting, trenching and scaffold permitting, and regulatory compliance documentation.
- Participate in planning and implementing a Hazard Communication Program in compliance with federal, state, and MIC policies, including hazardous materials list, MSDS file, container labeling, employee training, and subcontractor communications.
- Present safety emphasis to site employees as identified.
- Participate in and lead emergency responses.
- Maintain site metrics and share with site and corporate management.
- Planning:
- Partner with management in writing, organizing, and implementing job site safety plans.
- Work directly with the Project Manager and management team to develop, implement, and maintain an effective site-specific safety plan.
- Collaborate with the Safety Department on overall program, project training needs, injury management, citation management, OSHA/MSHA reporting requirements, and other applicable matters.
- Oversee the MIC injury management program; set up a working relationship with a local physician, explain the MIC philosophy of managing accidents, and provide for basic first aid.
- Training:
- Coordinate and present safety training to support MIC and client requirements, including topics such as Planning, Documentation, New Hire Orientation, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory, and more.
Qualifications
- Education and Work Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of construction safety management experience with demonstrated ability to provide a high level of safety leadership to both management and craft workers.
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- CHST preferred and will be encouraged.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
- When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
- Set a personal example of safe behavior.
- Functional computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Type and write reports with accuracy and appropriate grammar.
- Communication and report writing skills.
- Knowledge of MSHA/OSHA regulations and hazard recognition, record keeping, and injury management.
- CPR/First Aid Instructor certification and training experience.
- Work toward professional certification (CHST, CMSP, etc.).
- Maintain in-depth relations with all members of the team and supervisor.
Physical Demands
- Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
- Maintain physical strength and stamina; use arms, hands, and legs fully; push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
- Stamina to perform tasks repetitively and continuously for several-hour intervals.
- Uncontrolled environmental conditions: constant change in weather and site conditions.
- Moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.).
- Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
- Work at heights and abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; wear and utilize all required safety equipment.
- Evaluate information based on measurable standards; see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
- Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
- Maintain good balance and work at heights.
- See well (either naturally or with correction).

- Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.
Pay
- Compensation: $95,000 – $110,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
