Safety Manager

Skill Requirements

• High school diploma required; college degree preferred
• Certified Transportation Safety Institute (TSI) bus operator trainer certification
• Class “B” Commercial Driver License
• Airbrakes and Passenger endorsements
• Valid active medical examiner’s certificate
• At least 3 years’ progressive transit experience with commercial class “B” vehicles in a fixed route transit system
• Knowledgeable with DOT policies, OSHA, NIMS, EPA standards, and ADA requirements
• Experience developing and implementing safety program plans and procedures; conducting investigations, analyzing data, and identifying and recommending corrective action
• Maintain confidentiality and safeguarding of sensitive material
• Conducting oral presentations, relaying technical information in understandable terms
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce

Key Accountabilities

• Coordinate the monthly safety reporting
• Bring together performance trends in safety KPIs, delivery against location safety plans, and safety risk assessments
• Inform the location leadership team of safety performance with timely alerts
• Drive a continuous improvement culture in safety performance by working collaboratively with location
• Chairs Safety and Accident Review committees
• Investigate incidents, accidents, and work-related injuries including accident investigation, accident reports, accident files, accident register, and follow up with the claim’s office and adjusters as necessary
• Effectively direct Drug and Alcohol Program (FTA) for location to ensure complete federal and corporate compliance
• Manage Third Party Administrators and Vendors
• Lead the site implementation of the Safety Management System Plan, comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and tools to enhance compliance with corporate direction in efforts to reduce accidents/injuries in the workplace
• Monitor compliance with KTA’s SMS policies and procedures, conducting an annual safety audit
• Ensure all relevant statutory and regulatory safety policies are applied and adhered to
• Assists maintenance manager in ensuring compliance with environmental policies and regulations
• Monitor and evaluate the continued effectiveness of risk control strategies
• Identify and assess new hazards introduced in the workplace
• Oversee ongoing monitoring and recording of safety performance
• Establish and maintain a culture of safety so that safety is the front of mind consideration for all employees and a way of life within the organization
• Contribute to the safety culture through displaying exemplary safety-oriented behaviors
• Oversee classroom and designated instructors to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency in training methods
• Oversee design and delivery of driver training and safety courses including new hire and accident retraining
• Plan, schedule, and deliver monthly safety meetings

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Long periods (potentially exceeding 8 hours per day) of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting, balancing, stooping, twisting, squatting, handling materials, repetitive hand-wrist motions, and traversing uneven surfaces
• Exposure to both extreme heat and cold
• Exposure to loud noises, fumes, and airborne particles
• Operators/Drivers may work inside or outside vehicles and may operate vehicles for over 8 hours per day
• Operations Supervisors and Managers may split their work between an office setting looking at a computer screen/electronic device and active transit field locations driving in a vehicle
• Maintenance Employees may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals in a ventilated maintenance shop and may work with personal computers, laptops, electronic hand-held devices, complex electrical schematics, diagnostic software and testing devices, and other heavy machinery
• Office Staff may work indoors in air-conditioned or well-ventilated facilities, including offices and cubicle spaces equipped with a telephone and computer and may entail typing or looking at a computer screen
