Safety Manager

About the role

The Construction Safety Manager will support a very large educational facility construction program. Our Education team is a prime consultant to several school districts in the country and provides services to K-12 as well as higher education institutions nationally.

Responsibilities

• Perform management oversight of construction activity on behalf of the client, report on contractor regulatory and contract safety compliance on multiple projects sites.
• Maintain compliance with all current OSHA requirements that relate to the specific construction projects.
• Conduct daily safety reviews of work in progress in accordance with current Safety Regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Monitor adherence to Owner Controlled Insurance Program (OCIP) requirements and procedures.
• Support the Program Safety Manager, including attending required meetings and providing safety reports/analysis as requested.
• Attend construction meetings with the college project team and general contractor, leading the safety topic (toolbox), reviewing site observations (Observation Report), and reviewing upcoming construction schedules for hazard preparedness.
• Carry out ongoing construction site safety inspections and generate daily safety reports for all site visits.
• Review contractor safety submittals, JHA, MOP, Fall Protection Plans, Crane Lift Plans, Excavation and Scaffold Erecting Plans, Confined Space Entry and hazard assessments of other high-risk operations.
• Assess contractor submitted incident reports, participate in safety stand-downs, and prepare and submit lessons learned to the Program Safety Manager.
• Document safety orientation with contractor safety representatives.
• Maintain adherence to zero tolerance and corrective action policy for workers found not in compliance with the Program’s safety policy.
• Flexibly schedule and transport to work at multiple sites based on assigned schedule and duties throughout the greater Los Angeles area.
• Work in a fast-paced environment, establish daily work priorities, and oversee multiple active construction projects.
• Communicate effectively with Owner's Construction Management staff and Contractor's Site Management Team.

Requirements

• Experience working with OCIP.
• Experience with Safety Management for Public Sector Construction.
• Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER.
• Current OSHA 500 (Trainer in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry).
• Effective communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and other basic software programs used in Construction.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of commercial construction experience in the US with a general contractor.
• Minimum of five (5) years' experience in California with a Contractor or major subcontractor.
• Two (2) years' experience in construction of educational projects in a campus environment.
• Strong experience managing field construction teams on multiple projects.
• Experience on demolition, renovation, and new construction building projects.
• Experience working on OCIP programs.
• Minimum of holding a valid Safety Management Specialist (SMS) certificate or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) issued by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) or Certified Safety Manager Construction (CSMC) certificate issued by the National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP).
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
• Experience on modernization/renovation projects involving abatement, remediation of hazardous materials, hazardous material waste removal and handling, such as asbestos and lead-based paint.
• Strong experience working with senior management and field teams on large building programs across multiple sites and locations.
• Experience participating in scheduled construction Meetings with Contractors and Project Managers.
• Strong experience in safety incident reporting and daily construction reporting for multiple projects.

• Construction management, safety management, safety engineer or related degree is preferred.
