Safety Manager

About the role

This role oversees safety operations for a 100 MW solar construction site, with a strong focus on vegetation management and compliance with safety regulations. The Safety Manager leads safety initiatives, promotes a culture of safe work practices, and ensures that all site activities align with relevant OSHA standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all safety activities for a 100 MW solar construction site, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
• Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety policies, procedures, and programs in alignment with OSHA standards and industry best practices.
• Oversee vegetation management activities to ensure they are conducted safely and do not compromise site operations or worker safety.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments across the site, identifying hazards and implementing corrective actions.
• Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations and construction safety requirements, and update practices as standards evolve.
• Provide safety training, coaching, and guidance to site staff and contractors, including toolbox talks and refresher sessions.
• Investigate safety incidents, near misses, and accidents, prepare detailed reports, and drive root-cause analysis and preventive measures.
• Collaborate with construction, operations, and maintenance teams to integrate safety considerations into planning and daily work activities.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation, including reports, logs, permits, and training records.
• Promote a strong safety culture by encouraging hazard reporting, reinforcing safe behaviors, and recognizing adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

• Proven safety experience in construction or industrial environments, preferably related to solar or large-scale energy projects.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards applicable to construction sites.
• Experience applying OSHA 500 training or equivalent advanced OSHA safety knowledge in a field setting.
• Ability to manage and oversee safety aspects of vegetation management activities on an active work site.
• Skill in conducting safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments and implementing corrective actions.
• Effective communication skills to deliver safety training, convey requirements, and influence safe behaviors.
• Ability to investigate incidents, analyze root causes, and develop practical preventive measures.
• Organizational skills to maintain thorough safety documentation and records.

Qualifications

• Formal safety certifications such as OSHA 500 or equivalent advanced OSHA training.
• Experience working on solar construction projects or large-scale energy facilities.
• Background in construction safety management, including familiarity with site procedures and contractor coordination.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external contractors to align on safety expectations.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in dynamic field environments.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role at a 100 MW solar construction facility that includes active construction areas and vegetation management zones. The Safety Manager works closely with field crews, supervisors, and contractors in a dynamic outdoor environment that may involve varying weather conditions and terrain. The role requires regular presence in operational areas, adherence to appropriate safety gear and personal protective equipment, and active participation in daily site activities.

This is a Contract position based out of Glen Allen, VA.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
