Safety Associate
About the role
Columbus Springs East is a 72-bed behavioral health hospital in Columbus, OH, offering inpatient mental health treatment, inpatient substance use treatment, PHP, and IOP programs. As a Safety Associate, you will contribute to a safe, structured, and respectful care environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide continuous rounding and visible safety presence throughout the facility, focusing on high-risk areas.
- Observe, identify, and report safety hazards, unsafe behaviors, and environmental risks promptly.
- Monitor for high-risk patient behaviors and engage in therapeutic communication to promote safety.
- Assist with patient redirection and de-escalation using least restrictive interventions.
- Collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to support patient safety and continuity of care.
- Escalate high-risk events and incidents to the RN in charge and follow the chain of command.
- Participate in warm handoffs during breaks, meals, shift changes, and emergencies.
- Accurately document safety rounds, observations, and incidents in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory standards.
- Complete incident reports for applicable events, including aggression, sexual acting out, and suicide/self-injurious behaviors.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all information security policies.
- Apply age-appropriate communication and safety strategies to the behavioral health population.
- Orient new staff members and provide feedback to the interdisciplinary team.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED
- Associate's degree preferred
- Two years of experience in a psychiatric or mental health setting preferred
- One year of experience in safely managing patient behaviors preferred
- CPR certification required within 30 days of employment
- De-escalation certification required within 30 days of employment
- De-escalation instructor certification preferred
