About the Role

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking an experienced Ruby Developer to join our dedicated technical team remotely, based in the U.S. This full-time position offers an opportunity to contribute to the development and maintenance of critical APIs that facilitate seamless communication between internal systems, external partners, and third-party services. The successful candidate will design, develop, and optimize production-grade APIs, ensuring they meet high standards of security, reliability, and performance.

Responsibilities

• Designing and developing APIs, including setting specifications, creating endpoints, data models, and implementing REST and GraphQL interfaces.
• Developing and maintaining reliable, scalable Ruby services, ensuring code quality through rigorous code reviews and adherence to security best practices.
• Collaborating with technical leads, API architects, and engineering teams to align development efforts with organizational standards and goals.
• Integrating APIs with various internal and external systems, creating comprehensive documentation, and implementing secure development practices such as OAuth and encryption.
• Monitoring API performance, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing scalability.
• Managing API versioning, handling production incidents, and participating in Tier 1 and Tier 2 on-call support to ensure system stability and reliability.
• Using AI-enabled tools to enhance productivity and code quality as part of daily operations.

Requirements

• A minimum of six years of professional experience in Ruby on Rails development, demonstrating a deep understanding of API design and implementation.
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is required.
• Extensive experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Proficiency with testing frameworks like RSpec.
• Strong knowledge of secure coding practices, authentication, authorization, and encryption.
• Experience leading engineering teams while maintaining a hands-on approach to development is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and cloud-native technologies will be advantageous in this role.
