About the role

The Center for Magnetic Resonance Research is seeking to hire a Research Professional 3. The Research Professional will contribute to neuroimaging research focused on healthy individuals and patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders. This position is responsible for designing and implementing analyses of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) data, interpreting findings, and supporting the dissemination of research outcomes through publications, grant applications, and scientific presentations. The incumbent will work collaboratively with investigators, researchers, and staff at the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research and Department of Neuroscience.

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system. It is an interdisciplinary science that collaborates with other fields such as chemistry, computer science, engineering, linguistics, mathematics, medicine and allied disciplines, philosophy, physics, and psychology. The Department of Neuroscience is committed to providing excellence in research, education, and public service. The Department of Neuroscience is part of the University of Minnesota's Medical School. Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR), funded as a Biotechnology Research Center (BTRC) by the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) until 2012 and by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) since then, focuses on development of unique magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy methodologies and instrumentation for the acquisition of structural, functional, and biochemical information non-invasively in humans, and utilizing this capability to investigate organ function in health and disease. The distinctive feature of this center is the emphasis on ultrahigh magnetic fields (7 Tesla and above), which was pioneered by this BTRC. This emphasis is based on the premise that there exists significant advantages to extracting biomedical information using ultrahigh magnetic fields, provided difficulties encountered by working at high frequencies corresponding to such high field strengths can be overcome by methodological and engineering solutions. CMRR is home to some of the most advanced MR instrumentation in the world, complemented by human resources that provide unique expertise in imaging physics, engineering, and signal processing. No single group of scientists can successfully carry out all aspects of this type of interdisciplinary biomedical research; by bringing together these multi-disciplinary capabilities in a synergistic fashion, facilitating these interdisciplinary interactions, and providing adequate and centralized support for them under a central umbrella, CMRR amplifies the contributions of each of these groups of scientists to basic and clinical biomedical research. Collectively, the approaches and instrumentation developed in CMRR constitute some of the most important tools used today to study system level organ function and physiology in humans for basic and translational research, and are increasingly applied world-wide.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement analytical approaches for the processing and evaluation of MRI and MRS datasets obtained from healthy participants and individuals with brain disorders.
  • Utilize and manage large-scale publicly available neuroimaging datasets, including but not limited to the Human Connectome Project (HCP), Brain Analysis Library of Spatial Maps and Atlases (BALSA), Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS), Pediatric Imaging, Neurocognition, and Genetics (PING) Data Repository, and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).
  • Conduct statistical analyses, interpret findings, and prepare summaries of research results.
  • Draft manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and other scholarly materials.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences, meetings, and seminars.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty investigators, research personnel, and affiliated staff within the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research and other University partners.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: BA/BS plus four years of research lab experience, or a combination of education and work experience to equal eight years. Experience analyzing human MRI and/or MRS data. Demonstrated ability to contribute to scientific publications, presentations, or other scholarly products. Strong analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with large, publicly available neuroimaging datasets. Substantial research and publication record. Familiarity with neuroimaging analysis software, programming languages, and statistical tools commonly used in MRI/MRS research.

Benefits

  • Competitive wages
  • Paid holidays
  • Generous time off
  • Continuous learning opportunities through professional training and degree-seeking programs supported by the Regents Tuition Benefit Program
