Administers respiratory therapy procedures to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders. Assesses patient condition and consults with physicians to determine appropriate treatment plans, and monitors patient progress following procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Documents all patient care activities and ensures compliance with quality of care standards and department regulations.
Responsibilities
- Administers physician-prescribed respiratory therapy, including oxygen, respiratory medication, PFTs, ABGs, and all mechanical ventilation.
- Performs evaluation procedures, both invasive and non-invasive, to determine respiratory care needs and makes recommendations based on department protocols to improve patient outcomes and facilitate patient discharge.
- Monitors patients requiring mechanical ventilation, including clinical assessment, routine rounds, troubleshooting, weaning, airway care, and diagnostic testing to ensure safety and appropriate care.
- Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens for diagnosis.
- Measures patients' lung capacity to determine impairments.
- Offers diagnostic results and treatment suggestions based on patient analysis.
- Communicates with other healthcare team members to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
- Assures smooth operation of the PFT and ABG laboratory, or other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.
Requirements
- Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Respiratory Care.
- Licensed by the State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
- Associate's/2-year degree required.
- Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (if Certified or not registered by the NBRC, must obtain NBRC registration within 2 years of hire).
Skills
- Professional competency in the science of Respiratory Care commensurate with the NBRC credential.
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLS and/or NALS preferred.
- Prior experience preferred.
