Job Summary
Under general supervision, operates a variety of medium to heavy duty landscape and construction vehicles and equipment; operates light duty vehicles and equipment as needed.
Examples of Duties
- Operates a variety of medium to heavy duty trucks and tractors and other landscape and construction equipment;
- Performs technical landscape maintenance and construction activities;
- Applies pesticides and herbicides appropriately;
- Monitors, directs, and assists crews;
- Serves as crew leader as needed;
- Operates light duty vehicles and equipment as needed;
- Performs routine and emergency repairs on assigned equipment and vehicles;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED;
- One year experience operating various light to heavy duty equipment and vehicles (prior lead worker or crew leader experience preferred); or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Good knowledge of:
- The effective operation of complex landscape and construction equipment and machinery;
- Hazards involved in the operation of landscape and construction equipment and vehicles and the safety precautions to be observed in their operation;
- State and local laws pertaining to the operation of equipment on highways;
- Geographic layout of the City, including street names and neighborhoods.
Skill in:
- The safe operation of trucks and equipment assigned to position;
- Completing minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
Ability to:
- Perform strenuous work requiring good physical condition;
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Direct the work of assigned crew members;
- Prepare simple records;
- Meet and deal tactfully and courteously with the public;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees.
Special Requirements
- Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire;
- North Carolina Pesticide license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
