About the role

Under general supervision, responsible for coordinating and overseeing the routed dispatch office and its functions to ensure safe and reliable service throughout the service area.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain radio contact with transit fleet and provide information to drivers regarding transit routes and schedules.
  • Monitor on-time performance of coaches; monitor daily operations and related activities as assigned.
  • Use specialized scheduling and vehicle monitoring software to ensure necessary data is collected and transmitted to customers and other internal departments.
  • Assign scheduled operators to vehicles and routes; make last-minute/emergent schedule changes as necessary and in accordance with the contract; ensure assigned vehicles meet the needs of the assigned route; make adjustments to operator work schedules, vehicles and routes as customer needs change.
  • Notify operators of scheduled report times; assess operator fitness for duty; record late reports, attendance or appearance infractions and forward to appropriate supervisor; arrange for replacement operators as required.
  • Maintain vehicle readiness for service; perform pre-trip readiness evaluations; maintain service records; receive defect reports and arrange for maintenance/service; inspect for and report vehicle damage; arrange for repairs.
  • Handle simultaneous activities; receive and respond to operator and customer concerns related to service, routes and vehicles; answer telephone, radio communications and counter activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduation/GED and one year of experience in a transit or transportation operations function including public contact.
  • Capable of operating any Kitsap Transit vehicle.
  • One year of experience in a dispatch environment and/or experience in assigning different types of vehicles as day-to-day operational needs vary is preferred.

Skills

  • Knowledge of department and agency policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of guidelines such as labor contract, personnel rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of county geography and Kitsap Transit system, routes and fares.
  • Knowledge of operating characteristics of various vehicle equipment such as wheelchair lifts and mobility device securement.
  • Organizing, scheduling and assigning transportation routes.
  • Planning and guiding the work activities of others.
  • Keeping accurate and detailed records.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing in English.
  • Using public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • Using personal computers and office software including word processing, spreadsheets, specialized transit-related software and database programs in a Windows-based operating environment.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment, independently responding to problems and tasks that arise simultaneously and/or unexpectedly.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other Kitsap Transit employees and the public.

Qualifications

  • A valid Washington driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Class B CDL, airbrake restriction removed and passenger endorsement, within 3 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Bangor Base security clearance.
