Roofing Laborer

Responsibilities

• Assist Roofers and Foremen with preparing the job site and covering roofs with materials such as metal, shingles, copper, slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, and related materials.
• Operate hand and power tools of all types.
• Clean up debris from the roof surface and surrounding property.
• Assist with the installation of vapor barriers and/or layers of insulation on the roof decks.
• Cover exposed nail heads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage and rust.
• Assist with the installation of partially overlapping layers of material over roof insulation surfaces.
• Cover roofs and exterior walls of structures using brushes, knives, punches, hammers, and other tools.
• Operate vehicles, mechanized devices, or equipment.
• Repair cracks, defects, or damage using proper materials.
• Apply adhesives, caulking, sealants, or coatings.

Requirements

• High School diploma or G.E.D preferred but not required.
• General construction experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license preferred.
• Self-motivated, open-minded, and able to accept constructive criticism.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic safety techniques and procedures.
• Attention to detail, ability to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to organize, plan, and execute work assignments.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to work on a team.
• Ability to read and use a tape measure, mark, or record distances.
• General basic knowledge of construction materials and tools.
• Ability to identify problems and communicate them to the foreman.
• Ability to resolve problems in a timely manner according to instructions.

Physical Demands

• Standing for long periods of time.
• Climbing ladders, scaffolds, and stairways.
• Considerable use of arms and legs, and moving the whole body to climb, lift, balance, walk, and handle materials.
• Use of abdominal and lower back muscles to support the body repeatedly or continuously without fatigue.
• Seeing details at close range.
• Repetitive movement, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, or crawling.
• Ability to stand, walk, lift, and carry items weighing 50 pounds regularly.

Work Environment

• Working in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
• Exposure to very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures.
• Exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
• Exposure to contaminants, hazardous materials, or equipment.
• Mistakes can have serious consequences; safety procedures must be followed.
• Exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
• Exposure to high places or dangerous conditions.
