About the role

Our Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana Transportation team is searching for a motivated and experienced Roadway Design Lead who brings strong technical and design management skills to deliver highway‑related infrastructure projects across the region. This opportunity offers the chance to work on multi‑discipline transportation projects focused on highway, roadway, and interchange design for clients such as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), adjacent Departments of Transportation (DOT), counties, and local municipalities. The final candidate could be located in Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati, OH as well as Troy, MI.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership over all aspects of highway and roadway design—including support for design‑build transportation projects—in accordance with ODOT roadway design standards, AASHTO, FHWA, and MUTCD requirements.
  • Lead roadway design preparation at the conceptual, preliminary, and final design stages, including geometrics, alignments, grading, and maintaining traffic following ODOT procedures.
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and final bid packages using ODOT standard plans and statewide engineering details.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (roadway, drainage, structural, traffic, public involvement, environmental) and provide technical oversight on roadway and planning design tasks.
  • Conduct detailed plan quality reviews and participate in value engineering studies aligned with Ohio design guidance.
  • Direct and coordinate design engineers and technicians to ensure projects progress on schedule and budget, while mentoring early‑career engineers in developing high‑quality design plans.
  • Engage directly with clients, maintain strong client relationships, and identify upcoming opportunities to support pursuit and proposal efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio and/or Michigan.
  • Extensive experience delivering transportation projects within the highway market sector, including major infrastructure programs.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, InRoads, and Civil 3D, all commonly used for DOT project development.
  • Demonstrated experience with roadway design for state DOTs—strong preference for ODOT projects.
  • Strong technical background in traffic engineering, highway design, and roadway drainage, with expertise in AASHTO, FHWA, and MUTCD standards.

Preferred skills

  • Extensive 3D modeling experience using OpenRoads; strong MicroStation/OpenRoads proficiency.
  • Working knowledge of ProjectWise.
  • Active engagement in professional organizations.
  • Previous experience supporting alternative delivery (Design‑Build or P3) transportation projects.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance.
  • 401(k) plan and the ability to purchase company stock at a discount.
  • Eligible employees may also enroll in a deferred compensation plan or the Executive Deferral Plan.
  • Unlimited U.S. Personalized Paid Time Off (PPTO) policy for full-time salaried/exempt employees, seven paid holidays, and caregiver leave.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for additional rewards, including merit increases, performance discretionary bonus, and stock.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $135,000.00 to $165,000.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
