Roadside Assistance Driver - Flatbed (58851)
About the role
As a Roadside Service Tech Flatbed at AAA Northeast, you will provide safe and best-in-class roadside solutions for AAA members, ensuring positive member experiences while operating a tow or flatbed vehicle. You will respond to member requests within a given ETA, prioritize safety, and deliver services such as jump starts, tire replacements, and minor mechanical assistance. If a vehicle cannot be repaired on-site, you will tow it to a repair facility or other requested destination while promoting AAA products and services.
Responsibilities
- Accept calls and respond to Dispatch or members with an estimated time of arrival (ETA).
- Locate and greet members, addressing their emotional state (e.g., calming or reassuring them) while handling technical aspects of the situation.
- Assess scene safety upon arrival to ensure the vehicle is in a secure location for service.
- Provide minor mechanical assistance (if trained and equipped) and towing services:
- Diagnose probable causes of breakdowns by asking probing questions.
- Determine the best course of action and request assistance if unsure.
- Perform battery boosts following safety procedures.
- Safely tow vehicles in accordance with Club policies, AAA towing manual guidelines, or manufacturer specifications.
- Maintain AAA’s high standard of service and image:
- Keep the service vehicle and equipment in safe working order through regular safety checks.
- Maintain inventory of tools and products to complete all service calls.
- Follow traffic laws, safety procedures, and professional standards to avoid injury, crashes, or damage.
- Represent the AAA brand positively through personal appearance and vehicle condition.
- Follow temporarily repaired vehicles to ensure member safety or transport members if the vehicle is towed.
- Operate in-vehicle MDC computer to receive and update call information.
- Collect revenue accurately through cash and credit card payments based on services rendered.
- Safeguard confidential information and follow proper paperwork guidelines per Club policies.
- Promote AAA products and services, including battery replacement, and educate members on available offerings.
- Work with Dispatch to assist members in reaching their intended destinations (e.g., hotels, airlines, rental cars).
- Work independently with minimal face-to-face contact with the service team.
- Adapt to a variety of shifts to support a 24/7 operation.
- Prevent damage and injury by identifying secure towing points and responding to changing vehicle dynamics.
- Perform duties under pressure, in busy circumstances, and in varying traffic and weather conditions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Post-secondary training in automotive mechanics and familiarity with electrical troubleshooting.
- Active and valid driver’s license issued by only one state or jurisdiction.
- DOT card required pre-hire and maintained within 1 year of employment.
- Satisfactorily pass a motor vehicle record check during pre-hire screening and periodically during employment.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $21.50 - $25.75 per hour. Base pay may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, shift differentials, and experience. Additional compensation includes:
- Annual bonuses for eligible employees.
- Monthly and/or quarterly incentives for certain roles.
- Shift differentials:
- $2.75 per hour for overnight shifts (10 PM - 6 AM).
- $1.75 per hour for evening shifts (6 PM - 10 PM).
- $1 per hour for weekend hours.
Differentials can be combined.
