Description

The Road Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled and general labor duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of county roads, bridges, rights-of-way, and other precinct property. This position safely operates heavy equipment and commercial vehicles while assisting with roadway improvements, vegetation management, drainage maintenance, and other assigned public works projects. Employees are expected to work safely, efficiently, and collaboratively to support the daily operations of the precinct.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform general road, bridge, and drainage maintenance.
  • Aid with road construction, repairs, and maintenance projects.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, tractors, and other equipment, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operate equipment according to established procedures and specifications provided by the Foreman.
  • Perform tree trimming and brush removal along roadways and rights-of-way.
  • Mow ditches, easements, and other open areas to maintain safe road conditions.
  • Perform general labor, including shoveling, lifting, cleaning, and assisting with maintenance activities.
  • Assist other crew members with assigned tasks as needed.
  • Conduct routine inspections of assigned equipment and report maintenance or repair needs.
  • Protect surrounding property, utilities, and the environment while operating equipment.
  • Follow all county safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Report to work as scheduled and meet established project deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Ability to pass a background check and Department of Transportation (DOT) drug screening.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices related to road maintenance and heavy equipment operation.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow verbal and written instructions.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as: Backhoe, Excavator, Loader, Tractor, Dump truck, Chainsaw or similar equipment.
  • Experience in road construction, maintenance, or public works is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and walk on uneven terrain.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and humidity.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.

Mental Requirements

  • Maintain concentration while operating equipment and performing assigned tasks.
  • Exercise sound judgment and maintain a high level of quality and safety.
  • Able to prioritize work and meet established deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
