Corewell Health Trenton Hospital is a 193-bed, acute care teaching hospital that sponsors nine university-affiliated residency programs. This Magnet®-designated facility provides comprehensive medical and surgical care and is one of four recipients of the Truven Health Advantage Award in the category of Health and Clinical Outcomes. About This Unit
5 Surgical is a 24-bed unit with all private rooms, primarily caring for surgical and trauma patients. Surgeries include bariatric, general, trauma, and gynecological procedures. The unit also cares for patients with medical conditions and can monitor up to 8 patients on portable telemetry monitors. This unit is ideal for advancing nursing skills in critical thinking, time management, assessment, and patient satisfaction. The team is focused on patient safety and maintains high-quality scores. Trenton Hospital is Magnet Designated with Level Two Trauma and Stroke Certification, and the unit emphasizes shared governance to strengthen staff-leadership relationships.
Responsibilities
The clinical nurse utilizes the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care, incorporating patient-family centered care principles. They deliver quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an associate degree or higher (Diploma, A.D.N., B.S.N., M.S.N., DNP/PhD).
- If not minimum BSN-prepared, new graduates or nurses with less than one (1) year of experience must sign an educational contract to complete a BSN within a specified timeframe.
- RNs must enroll in an accredited BSN program within one (1) year of licensure and complete it within five (5) years (effective April 18, 2023).
- Graduates from non-accredited nursing programs must have at least one year of acute care experience or over two years of experience in a licensed healthcare role (e.g., LPN, EMT) and must have passed the NCLEX licensure examination.
Qualifications
- LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) – State of Michigan (required upon hire).
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (required upon hire).
- CRT-Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association (required within 180 days for Critical Care, Emergency Care, Pre-Op and PACU, Radiology).
- Nurses must obtain the National Institute of Health Stroke Screening (NIHSS) competency certificate within the first 30 days of orientation and ACLS certification within 6 months of employment on the unit.
