Responsibilities

• Supervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development using the nursing process and evidence-based information.
• Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the organization’s vision, values, mission, and critical goals into job performance.
• Assists the Clinical Director in managing the unit’s assigned staff and patient population; provides direct patient care according to unit/program needs and collaborates with physicians in executing the medical plan of care.
• Oversees staff to ensure adequate patient care, including hiring, onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and developing employees.
• Establishes or contributes to care plans, administers medication, checks dosages, avoids interactions, starts/maintains/discontinues IV lines, administers therapies and treatments, observes patients, records observations, and consults with physicians.
• Ensures compliance with policies and financial stewardship by maintaining department budget integrity.
• Serves as a resource to staff, patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and visitors to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and promote a healthy work environment.
• Teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, including post-treatment/home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-administration of medication and therapy.
• Facilitates inter/intra-departmental collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
• Participates in policy revisions, committees, and goal/action planning related to the unit.
• Contributes to recruitment and retention of staff through role-modeling, fostering peer relationships, staff education, and participating in preceptor/mentor programs.
• Coordinates educational and professional activities related to department/unit needs.
• Regularly rounds with physicians, patients, or families to facilitate quality practice and improve patient experience.
• Utilizes the nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide and evaluate patient care.
• Initiates and supports quality improvement initiatives and uses resources effectively.
• Directs staff in applying the nursing process and coordinates patient care to promote independent functioning.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• All RN staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients must know:
  • Stroke symptoms and warning signs
  • Protocols and pathways for stroke patient identification, evaluation, and management
  • NIHSS Stroke Alert activation and protocol
  • Stroke quality indicators
  • Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
  • Educational requirements and Stroke Center website resources

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN, BScN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution.
• Legally licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification (BLS Healthcare Provider Training Course).
• Registered Nurse (RN) state licensure (and/or compact state licensure).
• Must obtain certification in respective area of expertise within 1 year of hire or promotion for magnet standards.

Qualifications

• 2 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience (required).
• 3 years of Registered Nurse (RN) experience (preferred).
