About the Role

The Short Stay Unit is a fast-paced, 25-bed unit providing care for patients undergoing same-day/outpatient procedures, including pre/post-op surgical, cardiac, and infusion services. The unit operates Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with no on-call, night shift, or weekend requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for individuals or families, ensuring accountability for the quality of care delivered.
• Provide leadership in a professional practice setting, including mentoring and role modeling for peers and colleagues.
• Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and the skill level of RN, LPN, or support staff, including staff assignments and lunch breaks in a charge role.
• Consider patient condition, intervention complexity, and outcome predictability to maintain a safe environment.
• Provide verbal and written feedback on clinical practice and role performance to peers.
• Share knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues to foster a collaborative work environment.
• Encourage a culture of risk-taking and learning from mistakes, both personally and among team members.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical care and health services.
• Promote patient safety initiatives, such as National Patient Safety Goals, and participate in department-specific quality initiatives (e.g., evidence-based practice for population-specific care).
• Ensure appropriate order sets are used and supervise/evaluate assigned LPNs within their scope of practice.
• Utilize the nursing process to develop and implement patient care plans based on individual needs, as prescribed by physicians, nurses, and hospital policy, including patient and family involvement.
• Derive culturally and age-appropriate expected outcomes involving patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
• Analyze health status data to determine patient care needs, comparing findings with established norms.
• Assess and document changes in patient condition, notify physicians/supervisors, and intervene as appropriate.
• Accept assignments in areas outside the primary unit, performing duties within individualized competency.
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous lifelong learning for self and others.
• Promote the advancement of the nursing profession through participation in professional organizations.
• Seek formal and independent learning activities using current research and evidence to maintain and develop clinical skills and knowledge.
• Participate in systematic peer review and obtain informal feedback on practice from patients, peers, and colleagues.
• Identify areas of strength and opportunities for professional development.
• Adhere to time and attendance guidelines per hospital policy.
• Continuously evaluate and assess patient and family satisfaction, participating in department-specific initiatives to improve satisfaction.
• Promote compassionate, patient- and family-centered communication and attempt to resolve patient/family concerns.
• Utilize effective time management skills to complete assigned duties within the established work shift.

Qualifications

• Minimum: Current Pennsylvania RN licensure OR current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Preferred: Certification in area of specialty.
