General Summary
The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a professional Registered Nurse responsible for managing the unit during a shift. Responsibilities include ensuring patient safety, monitoring staff compliance with safety measures, coaching staff on safety standards, providing quality nursing care, and participating in quality monitoring activities.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Fulfills patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, critical lab notification, etc.
- Maintains and cares for central lines and prevents surgical site infections according to policy.
- Administers medications, performs nursing interventions, and educates patients and families.
- Maintains compliance with quality measures and provides education to staff.
- Monitors patient assessments and provides feedback to improve performance.
- Documents patient care activities accurately and efficiently.
- Communicates patient information to physicians and team members, and follows up on patient care concerns.
- Delegates tasks to staff and fosters teamwork.
- Demonstrates critical thinking and continuous learning.
Education and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.
- One year of registered nursing experience preferred.
- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact Licensure.
- Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications.
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Significant mental concentration required.
- Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities, and nearly constant walking required.
- Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
- Minimal physical discomfort.
Work Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious and hostile persons.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases via blood and other body fluids.
