RN - SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner)

About the role

Promote and restore patient’s health by completing the nursing process; collaborating with physicians and specialty team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner will provide a compassionate, coordinated, medical forensic examination, which follows the standard of care of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and Emergency Nurses Association (ENA).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment needed for sexual assault exams and work with a multidisciplinary team of representatives from within the community and the hospital setting.
  • Participate in shared decision making and maintain cooperative relationships among health care teams by communicating information, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Coordinate clinical patient activities in the absence of the Manager or Director of Emergency Services.
  • Quickly and effectively deal with potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; collaborate with team members and multidisciplinary members to make or recommend necessary adjustments.
  • Formulate a plan of care in compliance with guidelines from the IAFN, ENA, Sparrow Hospital, and the Medical Director.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in required in-service, staff meetings, and skills training.
  • Educate personnel with current and up-to-date information via presentations or lectures; assist the emergency department with educational needs and training goals.
  • While in the ED, assist RN/Physician in procedure set-up, transportation, specimen collection, and general patient care as outlined in the Emergency Department RN job description.
  • Perform additional role-related duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Current Michigan Nursing licensure.
  • BLS certification.
  • Completion of the SANE adult/adolescent training course within 90 days of hire.
  • Completion of the SANE pediatric training course within 18 months of hire.
  • TNCC preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
  • BSN preferred or currently studying toward completing BSN.

Skills

  • Must complete all in-services on drugs or procedures and attend all mandatory skills training and staff meetings.
  • Capable of performing general and advanced procedural duties.
  • Must be a “self-starter” and assertively take on challenging responsibilities while holding self accountable for results and performance.
  • Superb diagnostic and clinical skills; able to obtain a complete history, perform an extensive physical, and formulate a treatment plan while including team members.
  • Extensive knowledge of medication uses, dosages, and side effects as they apply to different disease states; able to assess clinical effectiveness of medications.
  • Promote team spirit and work collaboratively with the medical team.
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills; able to prioritize and perform a variety of concurrent tasks with minimal direction.
  • In-depth knowledge of physiological functions and processes as they relate to patient care.
  • Professionalism, compassion, and sound medical practice when dealing with challenging situations.
