About the role

Responsible for providing direct and indirect care to patients with behavioral health diagnoses who present to the Emergency Department (ED). The care provided by the RN must reflect initiative, flexibility, responsibility, and professionalism. Works closely with the ED, tele-psych providers, local county department of social services, and outside behavioral health organizations. Determines priorities of care based on physical, mental, and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. The RN communicates with Emergency Department providers about changes in patient's status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies and is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Responsible for meeting the established Nursing Standards of Practice for assigned patients, for managing supplies, medications and equipment in the department, and for promoting teamwork within and with other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Practice of nursing according to the rules and regulations defined by the state's Nurse Practice Act, Erlanger's Models of Care/Practice, policies and procedures
  • Delivery of patient care as assigned and supervision of other qualified staff to whom the nurse has delegated patient care in the exercise of his/her independent judgement
  • Address physical, spiritual, behavioral, emotional, and educational needs of the patient and coordinate the plan of care with other healthcare professionals
  • Participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position
  • Conduct all job responsibilities according to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Erlanger Health System

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program (BSN preferred)
  • Current, unrestricted North Carolina RN licensure, or Multi-State Nursing Compact Licensure (North Carolina licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-North Carolina residents)
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained going forward
  • De-escalation training certification in recognizing, reducing, and managing violent and aggressive behavior (example: MOAB Training) must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained ongoing thereafter

Qualifications

  • Previous behavioral health or ED experience preferred
