Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Maintain and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Ensure that reference material at nurses' stations is current.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and ensure its relevance.
- Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel.
- Make reports and recommendations to the Director as needed.
- Review and update department policies and procedures periodically.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
- Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel job descriptions.
- Participate in quality assurance programs.
- Prepare and attend facility surveys as requested.
- Review and update resident discharge plans.
- Plan the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
- Plan and conduct departmental services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
- Complete accident/incident reports as needed.
- Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
- Ensure compliance with privacy and security policies.
- Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information systems.
Committee Functions
- Attend various committee meetings as required.
- Prepare and present reports to committees.
- Provide information to Quality Assurance and Assessment Committees.
- Develop agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans.
- Implement committee recommendations.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Inform the Director about delayed physician visits.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care plans.
- Notify the attending physician and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
- Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or NARTs.
- Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions.
- Keep the Director informed of resident status and other matters.
- Monitor seriously ill residents.
- Authorize the use of restraints.
- Maintain compliance with medication and supply administration procedures.
- Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Check on residents unable to call for help.
- Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
- Inform family members of resident deaths and arrange funerals.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan and implement annual facility in-service training programs.
- Supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify routine and job-related functions for potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs.
- Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure work areas are clean and safe.
- Check on residents unable to call for help.
