Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
  • Maintain current reference materials at nurses' stations.
  • Recommend updates to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
  • Ensure compliance with job descriptions and policies.
  • Participate in facility surveys and update resident discharge plans.
  • Plan and implement the nursing services portion of resident discharge plans.
  • Meet with nursing staff to plan services and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms and evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and security policies.
  • Report occupational exposures and suspected incidents of fraud.
  • Monitor computer workstations and ensure proper logoff or screen saver activation.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various facility committee meetings.
  • Prepare and present reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee(s).
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care plans.
  • Review nurses' notes and provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Administer medications and treatments according to orders.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents and authorize the use of restraints.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Assist in planning and supervising clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify job-related functions involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Train personnel on the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
