About the role

Provides specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical procedures. Monitors airway, hemodynamic status, pain and level of consciousness during the immediate post-operative period, intervening promptly when complications arise. Prepares patients for discharge or transfer and provides post-operative education to patients and families.

Responsibilities

• Receive handoff from anesthesia and surgical teams and complete a full post-anesthesia assessment.
• Monitor airway, respiratory status, hemodynamics, level of consciousness and pain throughout recovery.
• Administer medications, fluids and blood products in accordance with physician orders.
• Recognize and respond to post-anesthesia complications, escalating to the anesthesia provider as needed.
• Apply discharge criteria and prepare patients for transfer to the inpatient unit or discharge home.
• Provide post-operative instructions and education to patients and their families.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Required)
• Post Anesthesia Care Unit, critical care or perioperative nursing experience (Required)
• Registered Nurse licensure in the state of practice (Required)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (Required)
