About the role

Provide nursing services in the Nursing Acute department in accordance with current applicable Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, regulations, and established policies and procedures. This role supports patient care, research, teaching, and community service as part of Mass General Brigham’s mission to deliver exceptional care through high-performing teams.

Responsibilities

• Assess physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients using knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases, and available resources.
• Provide written patient assessments on admission, document nursing interventions, patient responses, effectiveness, complications, and summarize information on discharge.
• Develop and communicate a nursing care plan based on assessment data to other patient care providers.
• Implement clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders following established policies and procedures, intervening with proper techniques and safety precautions.
• Assess, plan, and implement patient and family instruction, including verbal and written instructions on medications and side effects.
• Report patient care or management problems to the Clinical Coordinator or supervisor, investigate and intervene in problem situations, and coordinate unit routines.
• Make outpatient assignments based on acuity and staff qualifications, orient new staff, and ensure the presence and working order of emergency equipment.
• Demonstrate ability to care for patients across various age groups (pediatrics to geriatrics) and specialties (medical, surgical, short-term psychiatric).
• Demonstrate safe use of medications specific to the acute care patient population.
• Identify learning needs and pursue self-growth through continuing education and annual nursing competencies.
• Evaluate age-appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological norms, adapting communication and care techniques accordingly.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) state license required.
• BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire (AHA & ARC accepted).
• ACLS and PALS certification required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire, whichever occurs first (varies by specialty).
• Experience requirements vary by specialty:
  • ED: 3 years of prior ED experience preferred; TNCC & NRP preferred; CPI/AVADE/MOAB training preferred.
  • Med/Surg, Infusion, LDRP: 1 year of prior medical/surgical experience preferred.
  • NCMG: Minimum of 3 years of relevant clinical experience preferred.
  • Perioperative: At least 2 years of prior perioperative experience.
  • Dialysis: More than 1 year of experience in a medical/surgical unit required; critical care experience preferred; ACLS preferred.
  • Infusion: Strong IV skills or certification.
  • LDRP: At least 2 years of prior labor and delivery experience preferred.
• Professional certification in applicable nursing field(s) preferred (e.g., chemotherapy/biotherapy card for Infusion within 3 months of employment).
• Completed training in IS-100 and other mandated emergency management requirements (for Med/Surg).

Skills

• Ability to coordinate and supervise staff assignments, ensuring completion of duties (varies by specialty).
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to interact tactfully with internal and external customers.
• Proficiency in using medical and office equipment (e.g., telephone, fax, copier, computer, electronic medical records, fetal monitors, etc.).
• Physical ability to:
  • Stand and walk for 90% of the shift (varies by specialty).
  • Frequently push, climb, bend, reach, stoop, squat, and lift objects/patients ranging from 5 to 300 pounds.
  • Use hands, fingers, arms, and wrists for tasks such as operating equipment and providing patient care.
  • Differentiate colors (e.g., for perceiving changes in skin color or using color-coded tubing).
  • Utilize protective gear (e.g., face shields, masks, gloves, safety glasses) as required for patient care.
• Ability to work in emergency situations, handle stress, and adapt to operational issues in medical environments.
• Age-specific competency in evaluating and modifying care approaches for patients across all age groups.
