Job Specific Competencies

• Demonstrates ability to prevent hospital acquired infections related to hand-hygiene performance of self and staff.
• Demonstrates ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations including adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
• Ensures all supplies and equipment are available for each case.
• Reviews pertinent chart data and assesses patients perioperatively and documents appropriately.
• Absorbs and delivers teaching to patients and families in a clear manner.
• Prioritizes workload and prepares for specific operative procedures using appropriate preference card/case cart requisition.
• Assists in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of patients according to policy and procedure.
• Fulfills department and hospital protocols on the handling and documentation of surgical specimens.
• Fulfills hospital protocols regarding surgical counts and documentation.
• Collects, interprets, and communicates relevant data to patient care.
• Cleans and maintains equipment at the end of each case.
• Maintains accepted standards of aseptic technique and manages sterile fields using proper infection control practices.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of the surgical procedure, equipment, instrumentation, and supplies.
• Works in Endoscopy procedures as assigned.
• Responds appropriately to unanticipated or emergency situations during surgery or post-surgery.
• Able to troubleshoot equipment and instrumentation issues.
• Provides complete endorsement of patients to the PACU nurse.
• Collaborates with Materials Management and assists with inventory control and checking expiration dates.
• Follows policies and procedures for handling and disposing of contaminated and hazardous materials.
• Conducts "time-out" Universal Protocol appropriately.
• Prepares supplies for the next day's assignments on case carts.

Education + Experience Requirements

• Assoc. Degree or Diploma from nursing school.
• B.S. Degree in Nursing preferred.
• 1 to 2 years of experience in an operating room.

Credentials + Qualifications

• Current NJ Nursing License.
• BLS, ACLS, PALS - AHA approved.
• CNOR certification encouraged.
