About the Role

Assume primary administrative responsibility and accountability for all departments and personnel during assigned periods. Serve as on-site representative of UH administration and as a resource for all departments and personnel. Act as liaison between physicians, staff, patients, families, UH departments, and other institutions and agencies to promote communication, problem solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management. Report summary of incidents to senior management as required. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Responsibilities

• Supervision: Develop efficient organizational structure. Supervise employees including selection, termination, training, education, correcting deficiencies, performance appraisals, discipline, counseling, and scheduling work assignments. Encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives.
• Staff Development: Promote and participate in staff development programs/workshops pertinent to defined areas of responsibility/expertise. Assist in the orientation and development of supervisory personnel.
• Goals: Support, promote, and participate in the development and revision of departmental and hospital goals, objectives, policies, procedures, projects, and programs as assigned.
• Decision-Making: Participate in decision-making through active membership in departmental and interdepartmental committees and task forces.
• Communication: Communicate accurately, effectively, and in a timely manner utilizing appropriate chain of command and protocols. Promote communication by others. Convey staff needs, concerns, and identified problems to administration. Respond to media/public requests for information according to policy.
• Reporting: Report incidents, actions taken, and results to appropriate managers at the end of shift.
• Patient Safety:
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities for improvement.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their care by asking questions and reporting concerns.
• Liaison: Act as a resource and liaison between all UNMH stakeholders, including physicians, staff, patients, families, departments, and other institutions and agencies. Coordinate and facilitate communication, problem-solving, decision-making, crisis intervention, resource utilization, and conflict management.
• Leadership: Provide leadership and supervision to promote patient safety and satisfaction. Assist in the orientation and development of supervisory personnel. Provide guidance and support to department supervisors and charge nurses. Actively support continuous quality improvement activities. Promote employee safety and satisfaction.
• Role Model: Act as a role model for all departments and personnel. Adhere to UNMH policies and procedures. Demonstrate UNMH Behaviors of Excellence.
• Emergency Response: Respond to emergency calls for sudden, adverse developments in patients. Provide clinical and/or administrative support to institute emergency measures.
• Operations: Coordinate with Leadership, Emergency Management, and Security to initiate disaster plans. Facilitate departmental and institutional response to emergency situations.
• Staffing: Implement critical staffing guidelines to maintain unit operations during periods of critical staffing levels. Reallocate staff via floating and census management to balance workload and meet patient care needs. Assist Staffing Coordinators in completing staffing responsibilities.
• Resources: Identify, communicate, and resolve concerns related to resource availability, allocation, and quality. Facilitate procurement of required supplies and services.
• Coordination: Collaborate with Admitting Office, Access, PALS, physicians, and patient care areas to facilitate appropriate patient placement based on admitting service, diagnosis, acuity, census, and staffing considerations. Authorize transfers to and from other facilities as appropriate.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Program Graduate (Essential)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Essential)
  • Education specialization: Nationally Accredited Nursing Graduate Nursing
• Experience:
  • 3 years of directly related experience (Essential)
  • Bilingual in English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo (Nonessential)
• Credentials:
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers within 30 days (Essential)
  • RN in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM (Essential)
• Physical Conditions:
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently.
  • May require walking or standing to a significant degree or sitting most of the time with pushing/pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Working conditions: Significant exposure to chemicals and biohazardous materials; PPE required.

Subject to an annual contract and performance appraisal. Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and additionally as required.
