RN Nurse Practitioner - CT Surgery Clinic - Medical Group APPs - Full Time 10 Hour Days (Exempt) (Union)
Under the direction of the Department's Administrative and Medical Directors, this role facilitates safe and efficient operational flow for the cardiovascular patient population at Keck Medical Center. The Nurse Practitioner applies the nursing process, supervises clinical practice, provides education, leadership, and patient care management as part of inter-professional teams.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patient’s interpretation of health needs.
- Identify and treat patients’ diseases (e.g., post-implant VAD care, heart failure) while managing treatment of hospitalized patients using critical thinking, analytical, and planning skills.
- Identify patient’s educational needs and provide health-related information to enhance understanding of medical conditions, treatments, and prescribed devices or drugs.
- Obtain informed consent for procedures and counsel patients and families on care, medical problems, psychological issues, and treatments.
- Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret results.
- Develop and implement long and short-range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as specimen collection, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection-related conditions.
- Write orders to adjust medication, subject to physician review and counter-signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Document patient progress, update and summarize charts, change orders as needed, and notify physicians of changes in patient condition.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families on preventive care, medical problems, and prescribed treatments.
- Act as a lead in clinics, serving as a resource for RNs, LVNs, and support staff, and liaise with governmental agencies (e.g., CDC, NIH). Assist with medical research projects and obtain IRB approval for treatment protocols.
- Research and refer patients to appropriate community resources based on medical needs.
- Maintain compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Participate in in-service education programs and professional associations.
- Provide outpatient duties including cardiac clearance for surgery, pre-transplant evaluation, and independent evaluation of general cardiology patients. Support Cardiovascular Medicine physicians in clinics using a team-based approach.
- Coordinate follow-up care, triage phone calls, address clinical questions, and assist with pharmacy-related tasks. May participate in the telemedicine program.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Nursing or a related field.
- 3 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
- 2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in general cardiology, cardiothoracic, or cardiac surgery.
- Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures.
Qualifications
- Current and valid California Registered Nursing (RN) license.
- Current and valid California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license (ACNP, AGACNP, FNP, ANP, or AGNP).
- Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certificate for Schedule II-V controlled substances.
- National Board Certification in a Nurse Practitioner specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) certification (if no card upon hire, must be obtained within 30 days).
Pay
The annual base salary range for this position is $167,960.00 - $274,726.00.
