About the role

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, teaches patients and families about managing illnesses or injuries, and provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides.

Responsibilities

• Collect health data systematically, prioritizing as determined by the patient’s immediate condition or needs, involving the family.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and their specific health problems.
• Develop and implement plans of care that are evidence-based, providing for continuity of care.
• Initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs using a family-centered approach.
• Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes and document observations, interventions, and monitoring data.
• Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to ensure cost-effective, high-quality healthcare.
• Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards and maintain current knowledge.
• Integrate ethical principles and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and families in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
• Develop and evaluate evidence-based standards of care and identify changes to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Participate in and use evidence-based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care.
• Precept new hire staff and students, assisting them in completing competency skills.
• Support efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills.
• For RNs with direct responsibility for stroke patients:
  • Knowledge of stroke symptoms and warning signs.
  • Protocols and pathways for identifying, evaluating, and managing stroke patients.
  • NIHSS Stroke Alert activation and protocol.
  • Stroke quality indicators.
  • Available stroke patient education materials and community resources.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing (required).
• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5+ years of Registered Nurse experience (including direct patient care or indirect RN roles) at the time of hire.
• Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• 1 year of RN experience for Float Positions (required).
• More than 10 months of med-surg or acute specialty setting experience (preferred).
• Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona or compact state (required upon hire).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required).
• Unit-specific certification as required by specialty (required).
• National certification for unit-specific patient population (preferred).
