About the Unit

The ICU is a 20-bed unit serving a diverse patient population. The required skill set is broad and challenging, covering:

• Trauma (Levels I and II), including the area’s only OB trauma service
• Neurology (Stroke Center with three neurosurgeons)
• Cardiothoracic (open-heart program and interventional cardiology)
• Critically ill medical and surgical patients

Teamwork is critical, with a nurse-driven decision-making process supported by 24/7 intensivist and trauma surgeon presence. The interdisciplinary approach ensures collaboration across departments, and management is actively involved, supporting professional development and career growth through shared governance.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership in a professional practice setting and act as a team player by mentoring and helping others succeed.
• Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and staff skill levels, including charge role duties like assigning lunches.
• Ensure a safe environment by considering patient condition, intervention complexity, and outcome predictability.
• Provide verbal and written feedback on clinical practice and role performance to peers.
• Share knowledge and skills with colleagues and foster a culture of safe risk-taking.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical care and health services.
• Promote patient safety initiatives (e.g., National Patient Safety Goals) and department-specific quality initiatives (e.g., evidence-based practice for population-specific care).
• Ensure appropriate order sets are used and supervise/evaluate assigned LPNs within their scope of practice.
• Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate, and implement patient care plans based on individual needs, physician/nurse/hospital policies, and patient/family input.
• Derive culturally and age-appropriate expected outcomes involving patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
• Analyze health status data to determine patient care needs and assess/report changes in condition, intervening as needed.
• Accept assignments in areas outside the primary unit, performing duties within individualized competency.
• Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning for self and others, promoting professional advancement through participation in organizations.
• Seek formal and independent learning activities using current research and evidence to maintain and develop clinical skills.
• Participate in systematic peer review and seek feedback from patients, peers, and colleagues to identify strengths and areas for development.
• Adhere to time and attendance guidelines per hospital policy.
• Continuously evaluate and assess patient and family satisfaction, participating in department-specific initiatives.
• Promote compassionate, patient- and family-centered communication and attempt to resolve concerns.
• Utilize effective time management to complete duties within the established work shift.

Requirements

• Current State of PA RN licensure or multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• CPR certification.
• Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
• Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate.
• Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.

Preferred: Certification in area of specialty.
