Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
  • Maintain up-to-date reference materials at nurses' stations.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual and ensure its relevance.
  • Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel.
  • Make reports and recommendations to the Director as needed.
  • Review and update departmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
  • Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel job descriptions.
  • Participate in quality assurance programs.
  • Prepare and present reports to facility surveys.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans.
  • Plan nursing services portions of resident discharge plans.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan services.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
  • Ensure confidentiality of resident information.
  • Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various facility committee meetings.
  • Prepare and submit reports of nursing service programs and activities.
  • Provide information to Quality Assurance and Assessment Committees.
  • Develop agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review and update discharge plans.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Personnel Functions

  • Ensure sufficient nursing and support personnel are available.
  • Enroll nursing assistants in approved training programs.
  • Supervise nursing assistants under direct supervision of licensed nurses.
  • Monitor nursing staff performance and report problem areas.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Review and address complaints and grievances.
  • Administer fair disciplinary actions.
  • Report occupational exposures and incidents of fraud.
  • Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Escort physicians for rounds as necessary.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians about care plans.
  • Notify physicians and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
  • Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or trainees.
  • Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
  • Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints.
  • Ensure compliance with medication and supply procedures.
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Check on residents unable to call for help.
  • Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform family members of resident deaths and contact funeral homes.

Staff Development

  • Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
  • Plan and schedule annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify routine and job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs.
  • Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
