Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Maintain current reference material at nurses’ stations.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Maintain compliance with nursing service personnel.
- Make reports and recommendations to the Director as necessary.
- Periodically review department policies and procedures.
- Participate in facility surveys.
- Review resident discharge plans.
- Plan the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
- Meet with nursing staff and support personnel.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
- Complete accident/incident reports.
- Interpret department policies and procedures.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
- Ensure sufficient licensed practical and/or registered nurses and certified nursing assistants are available.
- Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from approved training programs.
- Monitor nursing service personnel for compliance with standards and procedures.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Ensure policies and procedures are followed.
- Review complaints and grievances.
- Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-department personnel.
- Provide a warm and positive environment for residents.
- Review and evaluate department work force.
- Participate in employee performance evaluations.
- Ensure fair and impartial disciplinary actions.
- Report occupational exposures.
- Ensure proper logging off or activation of screen savers.
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
- Greet newly admitted residents.
- Escort newly admitted residents to their rooms.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians.
- Notify physicians and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
- Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
- Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Administer and monitor medications and treatments.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Check on residents unable to call for help.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
- Inform family members of resident deaths and arrange transportation.
Committee Functions
- Attend various committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
- Prepare written and/or oral reports for committees.
- Provide information to Quality Assurance and Assessment Committees.
- Develop agendas for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
- Ensure rooms are ready for new admissions.
- Greet newly admitted residents.
- Escort newly admitted residents to their rooms.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians.
- Notify physicians and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.

- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan, conduct, and schedule in-service training classes.
- Develop annual facility in-service training programs.
- Plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify routine and job-related functions for potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs.
- Ensure availability and use of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel for compliance with safety regulations.
