About the Role

The RN Float is responsible for managing the care of patients experiencing psychiatric/mental health disorders in the adult and youth Partial Hospital Programs, inpatient units, and clinics. Coverage at residential sites is optional. The role involves assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and supervising nursing care pursuant to PrairieCare’s policies and procedures. Requires knowledge of nursing practices from an accredited school of nursing, with orientation in gender, cultural, and age-appropriate care.

Responsibilities

• Provide care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner, sensitive to patients’ developmental age, diversity, autonomy, dignity, and rights.
• Administer medications and refills accurately, verify allergies/contraindications, and monitor for side effects.
• Administer long-acting injections safely and complete medication refills.
• Educate patients and families about medications.
• Perform interventions as ordered by physicians, including lab draws, EKGs, UDS, Genesight, and hCG testing; document results and ensure safe handoffs.
• Provide care management in person and over the phone using psychosocial, physical, and behavioral assessments; triage conditions and provide individualized directives.
• Assess and triage TMS patients in clinics.
• Maintain patient and family confidentiality.
• Ensure a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures.
• Track and communicate pertinent medical and psychiatric information verbally and through EHR documentation.
• Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members; collaborate, seek advice, and accept feedback to ensure safe patient care.
• Assist with scheduling appointments and completing/coordinating referrals in clinics.
• Obtain insurance pre-authorizations for medications and track prior authorizations.
• Conduct nursing assessments upon admission and manage discharge planning for partial hospital programs.
• Use therapeutic approaches to manage milieus in partial hospital and inpatient settings, focusing on reducing restraint and seclusion.
• Plan and facilitate nursing groups with patients in partial hospital and inpatient settings.
• Lead and delegate tasks to Psychiatric Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Certified Medical Assistants within their scope of practice.
• Maintain competency in child/adolescent psychiatric/mental health nursing, including safe use of restraints, seclusion, and de-escalation techniques using collaborative problem-solving and trauma-informed practices.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Nursing School; BSN preferred.
• Current licensure as an RN with the Minnesota State Board of Nursing.
• One year of psychiatric/mental health nursing experience within the past two years (preferred).
• Professional certifications (e.g., RN ANCC Certification in Mental Health Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, or Holistic Health) are a plus.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate and make safe judgment calls in stressful situations, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to multi-task, use time efficiently, and prioritize appropriately.
• Flexibility to provide remote coverage for clinics and float to all PrairieCare locations (clinics, partial hospital programs, and inpatient units).
• Ability to intervene in pre-crisis or crisis situations, using de-escalation techniques and developing safety plans.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including maintaining confidentiality and openness to new ideas.
• Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office products and EHR.

Pay

Pay range for this position is $38 to $51 per hour, depending on education and experience. Individual pay rates consider skills, experience, education, market conditions, and internal equity.

Schedule

7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with the Float RN traveling between multiple locations.
