Overview
UnityPoint-St. Luke's is seeking a Full-Time Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department. This position works mid shifts from 2pm to 2am, including every third weekend.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates the care of patients and families utilizing the nursing process.
- Performs a physical and psychological assessment, collection of current symptoms, and obtains a detailed patient history.
- Utilizes nursing knowledge for critical thinking, planning of care, prioritizing of cares, and evaluating response to interventions.
- Plans for the needs of the patient and family.
- Performs triage, considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
- Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.
- Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
- Records patients' current vital signs per standard.
- Works directly with physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatments.
- Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intravenous) and records prescribed medications.
- Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
- Provides IV therapy.
- Cleans and bandages wounds.
- Provides basic, bedside care.
- Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.
- Reports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agencies.
- Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
- Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance nursing practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
- Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
- Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of accredited nursing program required. BSN preferred.
- Experience: Prefer one (1) year of Emergency Department clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.
- License(s)/Certification(s):
- Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
- Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to hire.
- Must obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 6 months of hire.
- Trauma Nurse Core Course within one year of hire.
- Must obtain NIHSS education within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter.
- Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.
- Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
- Multicultural sensitivity.
- Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.
- Customer/patient focused.
- Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
- Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental or own vehicle.
