RN Clinical Nurse II - (Per Diem) Progressive Care Unit

UNC Health’s Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Johnston Health includes 19 intermediate‑level care beds and provides high‑quality care to patients requiring antiarrhythmic and vasoactive drips, continuous Bi‑PAP, and other treatment modalities. Patients are on continuous cardiac monitoring with a 4:1 patient‑to‑nurse ratio. The PCU team consists of Registered Nurses, Monitor Techs, and Patient Care Assistants committed to compassionate, innovative care.

Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse coordinates and delivers patient care using the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Education: Identify and meet personal learning needs, attend relevant education programs, use patient education materials, assess readiness to learn of patients/families, and consider developmental level and learning barriers.
• Evaluation of Care: Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance for plan revisions, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicate information to ensure continuity of care.
• Implementation: Demonstrate competence in caring for patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, follow organizational policies, prioritize care, and consult resources for complex or high‑risk discharge planning.
• Leadership: Develop and achieve professional growth goals, support intra‑/interdepartmental collaboration, contribute to unit goals and performance improvement, use communication systems effectively, promote cost‑effective care, provide feedback, stay informed on public policy and regulations, and maintain a safe, clean, secure environment.
• Patient Assessment: Recognize data from complex situations, synthesize physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, assess discharge needs, and build relationships that empower families.
• Planning: Collaborate with patients/families to create or update care plans, utilize multidisciplinary resources, communicate plans clearly, address cultural and ethnic considerations, and prioritize tasks for complex cases.
• Research: Read relevant journals, bring ideas and questions to staff for applicability assessment.

Education Requirements

Graduate of a Board of Nursing‑approved nursing education program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.

Professional Experience Requirements

One (1) year of nursing experience.
