About the role

The Registered Nurse, Chronic Care initiates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of operational security.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history as required on each detainee/inmate entering the correctional system; medical problems are referred to the physician for extended evaluation.
  • Assist physician with sick call by screening patients and minor surgical procedures.
  • Treat detainees/inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refer other medical problems to the appropriate physician.
  • Ensure the implementation of physician's orders and that prescribed medications are administered as ordered using the formulary.
  • Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in dispensing medication.
  • Make observation rounds on patients, record in progress notes, evaluate symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients on periodic basis, and chart and report problems to management.
  • Maintain security while dispensing medications and remain cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among detainees/inmates.
  • Maintain non-involvement in the security aspects of care; destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.
  • Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports as necessary.
  • Maintain compliance with industry and company policies for accreditation.
  • Document all detainee/inmate contacts and maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling.
  • Supervise the workflow of the LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) staff and provide input into performance evaluation.

Qualifications

  • Excellent diagnostic skills, patience, and natural empathy.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located; maintain a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.
  • Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
  • Must possess competence in crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Must have the ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis and provide appropriate follow-through treatment.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently: Lift or carry and push/pull up to 40 lbs.; walk, stand, sit, bend, stoop and reach above shoulder level.
  • Occasionally: Lift or carry and push/pull up to 60 lbs.; work with machinery and climb.
