About the Role

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to assure successful, safe delivery of care. The Charge Nurse is a caregiver and often takes a modified patient care assignment. They practice in a clinical environment supported through the WellStar Shared Governance Model and steered by the WellStar Professional Nursing Practice Model and evidence-based practice. The role is a proactive member of an interdisciplinary team ensuring patients, families, and significant others receive individualized, high-quality, safe patient care.

Expectations include accountability, responsibility, and authority for nursing practice; effective teamwork; delegation; communication; respect; personal development; and development of team members. The role contributes to operational functionality, staff scheduling, unit patient flow, clinical expertise, physician rounding, committee involvement, and survey readiness.

Responsibilities

• Monitor equipment inventory, location, and utilization to ensure staff have the tools needed to perform their job.
• Participate in planning and requesting resources for high-quality care, including addressing staffing shortages or census surges.
• Proactively plan for patient care across the continuum while providing direct patient care.
• Participate in developing protocols and procedures to achieve best practice outcomes (e.g., reducing readmission rates, avoidable days, adverse events).
• Make patient assignments, considering new grads, float staff, and patient type.
• Conduct daily discharge/length of stay reviews and round with physicians/surgeons.
• Assign surgery beds in conjunction with the surgery schedule and consult with nursing administration on bed flow.
• Manage Emergency Services assignments, sections, waiting rooms, and operational hours.
• Round on patients daily to evaluate quality and appropriateness of care, taking corrective action when needed.
• Oversee or perform the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation) using evidence-based practice and critical thinking.
• Provide or oversee relationship-based, patient-centered care through comprehensive communication, interdisciplinary evaluation, and patient teaching.
• Practice using current clinical standards with a focus on safety and quality.
• Communicate with nurse managers about care delivery or employee performance concerns.
• Coordinate safe, high-quality patient care, including interdisciplinary communication and planning/rounds.
• Demonstrate fiscally responsible teamwork to support recruitment and retention.
• Participate in performance improvement, research, and shared governance initiatives.
• Ensure patient/family/staff confidentiality and corporate compliance, including mandatory education and proficiencies.
• Serve as a preceptor or mentor for professional nurses, staff, or students to develop a qualified workforce.
• Promote evidence-based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement.
• Participate in value analysis for patient care products and uphold organizational policies and clinical competencies.
• Address practice questions through data collection, consultation with experts, and appropriate resources.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all WellStar Health System policies and standards.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing as an Associate Degree/Diploma Nurse or Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing (preferred).
• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience or minimum 2 years (preferred).
• Experience as a relief charge nurse with clinical expertise (preferred).

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required upon hire).
• Registered Nurse (Single State) or RN - Multi-state Compact license (required upon hire).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (preferred).
