About the Role

The 6 East Cardiac Intensive Care Unit/Progressive Care Unit cares for critically ill patients recovering from acute MI, cardiogenic shock, CHF, cardiac arrest, and various percutaneous interventions. The unit also treats cardiac patients suffering from heart attack, heart failure, arrhythmias, and other percutaneous interventions in a progressive care setting.

Patient population includes those with ST elevation MI, unstable post-cardiac procedure, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest requiring hypothermia, or any hemodynamically unstable patients requiring pressors or devices such as Impella or IABP. The treatment team consists of RNs and Patient Care Techs on day shift.

RNs are required to take Critical Care Core classes or test out. ACLS certification is required. Every other weekend and every other holiday per year are required for full-time and part-time team members.

Responsibilities

• Gather and analyze patient information
• Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an individualized plan of care
• Use teach-back methodology to educate patient and family
• Actively seek to prevent potential hospital-acquired conditions
• Effectively communicate patient status, priority goals, and interventions during consultations, rounds, and handoffs
• Follow all HIPAA policies and procedures
• Behave in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals

Requirements

• Graduation from a school of nursing that qualifies the graduate to sit for the NCLEX exam to become licensed as a Registered Nurse
• Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License
• BLS certification
• ACLS certification (required for this department)
• BSN preferred; effective January 1, 2013, all new hires must have a BSN degree or agree in writing to obtain their BSN within five years from date of hire or transfer to an RN role
• Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs
• Interpersonal skills necessary to initiate and maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families
• Critical thinking skills necessary to perform principal duties and responsibilities
• Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when planning and performing professional nursing care
